Ding, dong.
The doorbell rang from downstairs, sending a rush of excitement through Ella. Ziggy, her best friend, was finally back from camp.
Ella dashed out of her bedroom, her heart racing, and nearly collided with Alejandro, her sister's boyfriend, who was lounging in the hallway.
"Jesus, Ella! Can you walk when you're in the hallway?" Malinda scolded, her voice a mix of annoyance and amusement.
"Sorry! It's just that Ziggy's here!" Ella shouted over her shoulder as she sprinted down the stairs.
She flung the front door open, and there was Ziggy, grinning from ear to ear.
"Ella Bella!" Ziggy exclaimed, her arms enveloping Ella in a fierce hug that lifted her slightly off the ground.
"I missed you so much, Zig!" Ella said, squeezing her back tightly.
Ziggy reluctantly released her, stepping back to meet Ella's gaze. "Come on! I brought Carrie over so we can re-read the book together."
The two girls headed into Ella's room, their laughter echoing as Malinda and Alejandro slipped out of the house, leaving them in their own little world.
Once they were settled on the bed, Ziggy animatedly recounted her camp adventures, the highs and lows, and all the in-between moments that made the summer memorable. But as they read the opening chapters of Carrie together, Ella noticed a shift in the atmosphere. Ziggy seemed tense; her usual vibrant energy dimmed.
"So, it sounds like to me that not a lot happened at camp." Ella remarked, trying to coax her friend back into the light.
Ziggy shrugged; her gaze suddenly focused on a spot on the floor. "No, not really, I guess."
Ella's brow furrowed. "Really? Because it seems like there's something you're not telling me."
Ziggy pulled herself up from the bed, sitting up straight with an expression that sent a jolt of worry through Ella. This was serious.
