X. witch bitch
A week had passed, but it felt more like a lifetime to Ella. Camp Nightwing was everything she'd dreaded: Ziggy was still cold as ever, the Sunnyvalers were insufferable, and the food was a sad, flavorless excuse for fuel. Yet, there was one unexpected upside, her budding friendship with Nick Goode. Somehow, they just clicked. They shared a love of Stephen King, Fleetwood Mac, and oddly enough, Topik chocolate bars. Sure, he couldn't fill the void left by Ziggy, but he was a friend. That counted for something.
Right now, Ella and Nick strolled through the woods, killing time before the Colour War later that night. Sunlight streamed through the canopy, casting shadows over the forest floor as they bantered back and forth.
"Okay, but Carrie is Stephen King's best book, hands down." Ella insisted, using a thick branch as a makeshift walking stick.
Nick laughed, shaking his head. "No way! 'Salem's Lot is where it's at. Kurt Barlow is terrifying. Carrie doesn't even come close."
Ella rolled her eyes. "You're wrong, but I'll let it slide."
They laughed, enjoying the easy rhythm of their conversation, until a sharp voice interrupted them.
"Nick! What the hell are you doing hanging out with this Shadyside piece of crap?"
Ella turned, annoyed, to see Kurt, the self-appointed ruler of Camp Nightwing. He was technically the head counsellor, but he acted like he ran the entire camp, taking full advantage of the adults' perpetual absence.
Nick's face hardened. "Kurt, I've told you a million times, her name is Ella. I'm hanging out with her because I like her."
Kurt smirked, looking between them with distaste. "Jeez, don't tell me you have a thing for a Shadysider, Nick."
Ella scoffed. "This might be a foreign concept to you, but men and women can actually just be friends. But that's why you don't have any, because you disgust women. That's probably why you're eighteen and never had a girlfriend before."
Kurt's face twisted with anger. "You little-"
Before he could finish, a distant scream echoed through the trees, cutting him off. Ella's heart jumped.
