Reyes tried to steady her breathing as she heard Sheriff Goode's footsteps echo through the mall. Her heart raced, pounding against her ribs as doubt crept in. What if the plan failed? What if the killers got to her and Deena, turning them into another grim statistic in Shadyside's cursed history? The idea of Sunnyvale winning, of Nick Goode coming out on top once again, gnawed at her. She clenched her fists, forcing herself to stay focused. They had to succeed, there was no other option.
"Ziggy." Nick's voice cut through the silence, cold and laced with authority.
Ziggy's reply was a mixture of bitterness and defiance, her voice rough. "Nick."
"What are you doing here?" He demanded, his tone edged with suspicion.
Ziggy didn't hesitate, firing back. "Why did I survive? Why was Ella left for dead?" Her words weren't part of the plan, but Reyes understood. Those questions had likely haunted Ziggy for years, filling her mind with resentment and regret. Why had Nick saved her while leaving Reyes' aunt, Ella, to die?
Nick seemed taken aback, his surprise evident in the brief intake of breath. "She couldn't have survived those injuries." He stammered, sounding defensive. "I went to you because you had a chance."
Ziggy scoffed; her gaze cold as she stared him down. She took a step back toward the rope, her expression hardening. "Tag." She said, gripping the rope. "You're it." She yanked it down, releasing the bucket and dousing Nick in blood mixed with neon paint, a mixture that he wouldn't realise was Reyes and Deena's blood until it was too late.
From her hiding spot, Reyes watched as the blood splattered over Nick, a sickly, shimmering red under the UV lights. She took a deep breath, steeling herself, then opened the gate to unleash Ryan Torres. She held her breath, watching as he staggered forward, his eyes locked onto his new target.
Nick's eyes widened as he realized their plan. He grabbed Ziggy, his voice a mix of rage and desperation as he shouted. "Deena! Reyes! Get them away from me! If I die, she dies!"
Before he could follow through on his threat, Ryan plunged a knife into his back, sending him reeling in pain. Ziggy took the opportunity and broke free, her scream piercing the darkness as she sprinted toward safety, until the Humpty Dumpty killer caught her, his fingers tight around her arms as she struggled.
