Twenty-One: Oko

"Tonight?" I ask Kartir as Johanna gives me glance; the glance is sort of like, 'are you serious? Why do you need them to repeat it for you?'.

But, she doesn't judge me audibly.

Kartir nods. Their dyed green hair lays curled on their forehead. "Yeah, Oko. The plan is tonight." Kartir turns to face both me and Johanna. "The best plan is for you two is to get rest before nightfall." Kartir blows a kiss as they leave.

Johanna "catches" it and holds it to her chest.

The door slams shut with a loud click.

Johanna flops backward on to her cot. "You, know I actually need to get something off my chest."

I raise a dark eyebrow. "And what would that be?"

Johanna sighs, somewhat happily and soothed, "I think I'm falling for Kartir."

"So? What does that have to do with me?" I have to restrain myself from saying 'precisely nothing'.

Johanna flips over onto her stomach. "Well, my whole time with the "illness"--I guess you could say in Daskanalasć's eyes--I haven't been overly interested in too many enbies before...But, I'm not so sure about that anymore. I love Kartir's features---their curly green hair, their bubbly blue eyes..." Johanna sort of seemed to trail off. But then she comes to one point, "I just want to screw them. Don't you?"

I sigh. "No."

Johanna cocks her head to the side like a confused puppy. Her gaze seems to shout, 'how could you not want to?'.

I remind her, "Asexual, remember."

"Oh yeah!" Recognition.

A guard outside the heavy, almost blast-proof door, shouts in, "Lights out!" Then he stumbles away.

In this purgatory like state, lights out would be about at--I'm not good at this, I don't have a clock, so I have to calculate it--probably five pm.

Johanna says, "I don't know about you, but when I get shut eye, I plan to dream of Kartir..." a pause, then, "...hooking up with me."

I roll my hazel eyes and mutter, "Of course you would."

Johanna eyes me. "What was that, Oko?"

I say, "Nothing."

Johanna smiles. "Good." She curls up and sleeps.

My mind says, maybe I should do the same. I lay down on my cold metal floor, wrap my gray dull blanket drape around me, and let my sleep take over.

Once again, I dreamed the same thing as I do each night.

I dream of my capture and life on the run.

"Come on, Oko," I said out-loud. I quickly put my jacket on.

"Oko, honey?" My mother said outside my door. "Come on! Just unlock the door. All that's here is me, your father and some friends."

And aloud, I snarled, "Bullshit."

Silence.

I opened the window. And then, I slipped into the night.

It'd had been weeks since then.

It'd been staying with my friends. Each one had made an oath to keep me safe.

One of my "friends", Laz, when asked why, said, "Because friendship's is thicker than family's."

Gregory had agreed with Laz.
