16. Runaway

You could feel your body shake with excitement.

The match between the national U-20 team was a great opportunity for any striker wishing to go pro. It would give the players an opportunity to show their skills to all of Japan, and put their name out there. By winning this match, it could launch your football career into the stratosphere!

As soon as Ego had announced the big game against the U-20 match, naturally both intrigue and curiosity arose from the players. It couldn't be helped, too quickly and briefly tell everyone they would be playing a game that could determine their futures was a pretty big thing to do.

"Hey...! Hold on just a sec. I get that this is a chance for us and all, but you said "Blue Lock eleven"." Raichi pointed out amidst the crowd. "How are you determining the numbers?"

"... Don't tell me." Gagamaru added with concern, lacing his voice. "You're gonna have some of us play as midfielders and defenders..."

Ego let out a hum in acknowledgment of the question. The man gave a short and sweet answer. "Yeah, of course. And a goal keeper too. Other than the forwards, we're gonna have to rush together a team."

Ego's answer definitely did not inspire hope in the lot of you, in fact it only grew their concerns at this last minute game and you didn't blame them. Out of 35 people, only eleven could play. Not only that, but only three could actually play the position they played naturally and one would even have to play as a goalkeeper.

"That's... just too much!!"

"Our opponents will actually have defenders and stuff!"

"This is a predicament..."

"Shut up and watch your tongues. I'm not a goddamn moron." Ego said, causing silence to fall upon the room. "The formation of Blue Lock will center around the following six names i will call out. These individuals ranked as "the top 6", this method will be our best shot seeing as we only have 3 weeks to get things together."

You could feel yourself growing anticipation at Ego's words. The idea you would finally see your true unfiltered rank, was extremely exciting and nerve wrecking. You wondered how you scored compared to everyone else in Blue Lock. Surely you wouldn't be first, or even top 6, however even on the off chance you could be considered one of the bests you could feel your heart race and palms sweat. It would also give you a good idea of other people's abilities and give you future targets for who to look out for.

"Those who are called, step forward..." Ego said, as the entire room fell into a silence, no one wanted to miss the opportunity to hear the names that were called in hopes it would be theirs.

"First as overall number 1..."

"Itoshi Rin. "

It was no surprise that Rin was first. Someone like him could probably already be world class level. Regardless, it gave you a sense of pride to know you had managed to play, and keep up with the best player in BlueLock.

Moving on, number 2..." Ego said monotonously. "Shidou Ryusei"

Your eyes widened as the male looked back at you with a smirk, and stepped forward. He would definitely savor the image of your shocked face.

"There it is, bada bing~" Shidou said, with a light arrogant smile on his face as he stepped up next to Rin who just silently glared at him.

"Huh?! You're actually that good?!" Igarashi cried out, stepping away from Shidou who just shrugged in response.
