1000 years prior to the start of the story, there was a man known as the Black Wizard Zeref, he was regarded as the most powerful and wicked mage to have ever existed as he had created demons for stronger than any human can ever hope to defeat. However, one day he and his demons disappeared without a trace, leaving scars on humanity's hearts and minds that continued to remain long after the Black Wizard and his creations vanished.
Then, one day an orphan boy named Asta Dragneel, after running away from his village due the unjust treatment he sustained from them for being born without magic power, stumbled upon an ancient ruin in a remote and seemingly unexplored valley while seeking shelter. He entered to find an old library in the back of the structure and pulled one book off the shelf to read out of curiosity. However, when he opened the ancient tome, a blinding light appeared from it and a man with long dark hair appeared before the boy. The man sensed something familiar from Asta and asked him who he was. Asta introduced himself and the stranger's eyes widened as he realized why the child seemed familiar before kneeling before him and saying, "I am Mard Geer, a demon created by your father, Zeref Dragneel. It's an honor to be in your presence, young master." The orphan was shocked to hear this and wondered what this meant. The demon explained everything thing to Asta and the truth about the Black Wizard was revealed. The boy than made his decision and began to summon the demons his father created with the help of Mard Geer.
