Tanjiro Kamado, eldest son of a family of charcoal burners, had went to town to sell charcoal, only to come back the next morning to find that his mother and all but one of his siblings were slaughtered in their own home. As he was bringing the remains of his deceased family outside to bury them, he found a hidden chamber under the floor of his house. There he found an insanely heavy sword and a ring that resembled a demonic face. The ring spoke to him, saying, "We finally meet." The ring introduced itself as Zaruba and explained to Tanjiro that he was the heir to two great legacies, and told them boy that he sensed a demon's presence at the time his family was murdered, and had abducted his only living relative, his younger sister, Nezuko. This was when Tanjiro made a vow, to become strong enough to avenge his family and rescue his sister.
