After being neglected, bullied, and abused by everyone in his village, 8 year old Asta ran away being unable to tolerate the cruelty. Shortly after leaving, Asta was attacked by a man like monster that muttered about consuming more souls. Knowing that he was going to be eaten, he ran for his life, but the monster quickly caught up to him. Asta thought he was going to die for sure until a woman wielding a black bladed scythe appeared and killed the monster. The weapon then transformed into a man and devoured the monsters soul. The man and woman introduced themselves as a Meister and Magic Weapon and asked him why he was out there alone, and Asta told him about his life up to that point. Out of pity, the duo decided to adopt the boy and train him to be a Meister.
