*****************************"Are you nervous?" Hazel asked softly. He shook his head.
"Not really."
"You're lying," she called him out. "I know you're nervous. It's your first Super Bowl. There's no way you're not nervous."
"Okay, a little bit," he admitted. She put her hand to his cheek.
"You're going to do great," she promised. "I'll be right there, cheering you on. No matter what happens, I'll be right there. You're gonna do great."
"Thanks, Haz," he blushed, looking at the floor.
"You're welcome. I promise, you're-"
A knock on the door startled the two of them. Jimmy walked into the room, and he practically jumped.
"Oh!" he exclaimed. Of course Logan was here. He was always here.
"Oh!" Hazel exclaimed back. "I, uh-"
"I was just on my way out," Logan said coolly.
Can I have a kiss? he mouthed. She nodded, and he gave her a peck on the cheek. Jimmy's stomach balled up in disgust.
"I'll see you later. Good luck, Logan," she said softly, giving his hand a squeeze.
"Bye, Hazel. Bye, Jimmy," he added.
"Bye." Jimmy was close to tears, but he didn't allow himself to cry.
"Hey," Haz said, smiling.
"Hi."
"You excited?" she asked. The tension was almost palpable.
"Yeah."
"You nervous?"
"Yeah."
"Are you alright?" she asked him.
"Yeah," he lied. His heart was breaking in his chest with each word she said, no matter how harmless.
"I-I'm sorry about Logan," she stammered. "I didn't know you'd be stopping by."
"No! No," he said quickly. "I didn't tell you I was coming over. It's my fault, really. I mean, he is you boyfriend," he laughed unconvincingly, the word like vinegar in his mouth.
"As long as you're cool with it," she blurted.
"Of course!" Jimmy blurted back. They had never been this awkward around each other before. And it hurt Jimmy like hell. Because she was his everything.
"I'll see you after the game," she said after a long moment. He nodded.
"Addy has your ticket. You're going with her, Nikki and Ashton, Gisele, Ben, and Vivian. You're also going with Angela, Frank, Willie, Rose, Tom, and Galynn."
"Who are...?" she raised her eyebrow. "I only know Addy, Nikki, Ashton, and Gisele."
"Ben and Vivian are Tom's kids. Tom and Galynn are his parents. Angels and Frank are Julian's parents. Willie and Rose are Danny's parents. You'll love Rose and Angela. They're so sweet. Galynn can be a bit...a bit distant. But you'll get along fine. And if you don't, you have Addy and Nikki. And Gisele," he added.
"Are your parents coming?" Hazel asked him.
"Yeah. They're not sitting with you, though. I figured they could sit with my brothers."
"I didn't know they were even here," Hazel said indignantly, and she was slightly put out that Jimmy hadn't told her. She would have hung out with them all weekend if she had known.
"They got in early this morning," he defended.
"I was just surprised that you didn't tell me. Relax."
"Don't tell me to relax, I haven't done anything wrong," he snapped. "I'm sorry I forgot to tell you the family was coming in. It's my first Super Bowl, what else did you expect?"
"Geez, Jimmy. It's not a big deal. I just wanted to be able to spend some time with them. Sorry," she shook her head exasperatedly.
He had been acting so oddly since last week, and she had absolutely no idea why. It seemed like he was just pushing her away.
She's been acting so pretentious lately, he thought, shaking his head in exasperation. She's acting like Logan is her everything. She doesn't even know him. She doesn't even love him like she does me.
"Well, um....Good luck, Jimmy," she said softly, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply; this was where he felt at home.
I love you, Hazel, he thought desperately. I love you more than anything else in this world.
"I'll see you."
"After the game," she nodded into his shoulder, and he planted a kiss on her head.
She was filled with a tingling sensation, and it was so wrong. Logan was her boyfriend, but Jimmy, her best friend, was filling her with something she had never felt toward him. And she didn't like it. Logan was practically a stranger compared to Jimmy, but still, it was an unwelcome feeling. So she pulled away.
"Good luck."
