ACT III CHAPTER 24
( hold onto the memories )

EVELYN WAS DENIED THE OPPORTUNITY TO FULLY GRASP HER INTRICATE MEMORY. Every inch of her being became devoid of sensation as two Peacekeepers ushered her into the luxurious styling room and settled her onto a majestic seat.

Candy and Pepper showed little regard for her welfare, fixated solely on camouflaging the weighty bags beneath her eyes and the tiny bruises incurred from her witty remarks.

In spite of their utmost endeavors, the shades of grey and purple persisted. The stylists, defeated, presented her with the ensemble (which she barely acknowledged), and departed the room as they had done before.

Evelyn couldn't move.

A wave of shutdown engulfed her entire being, inducing a profound sense of paralysis. At long last, she turned her gaze towards the mirror, and upon encountering her own reflection, Eve was overcome with an outpouring of tears.

The haunting specter of Finnick's demise relentlessly tormented her consciousness, engulfing her thoughts and emotions in an all-consuming grip.

In the periphery of her vision which were shimmering with tears, she caught sight of a delicate, pale blue dress adorned with minuscule stars outlined in black along the hem. The garment evoked memories of the attire she wore during the fateful reaping of the 68th Annual Hunger Games.

Victorious in the games, yet they signified the demise of Evelyn's existence, leaving her bereft without Ace. Now, with the belief of Finnick's death, it felt as if her very essence had been forfeited.

With a resolute inhale and a deliberate exhale, the golden-haired girl acknowledged her continued presence in the Games, recognizing that the arena had merely shifted its surroundings. And amidst it all, President Snow persisted in unleashing his monstrous Mutts upon her.

Mutts... Curious inconsistencies began to unravel, leaving her perplexed and questioning the puzzle before her.

Intriguingly, the contemplation of her beloved's demise seized her thoughts now, as if it were an undeniable truth. The initial recollection did transpire, yet towards its conclusion, Evelyn had drifted into slumber within his embrace... an occurrence that transpired two years prior to the 75th Games.

With a graceful swipe, Evelyn banished the cascading tears, her lustrous eyes expanding as the weight of realization settled upon her. The haze in her mind, she discerned, stemmed from the distortion of her authentic memories, tainted by the venomous sting of Trackerjackers.

A fleeting chuckle danced upon her lips, but to any eavesdropper beyond the door, it would have masqueraded as a shattered sob.

Draped in the ensemble, Evelyn delicately brushed away anymore stray tears. As she swung open the door, the Peacekeepers stationed as sentinels were astounded by the radiant smile that illuminated her battle-scarred visage.
