CHAPTER NINE: STAR-SPANGLED DUO
THE SERUM CAME WITH A CONSEQUENCE.
Not for Steve, but for Maggie. And that consequence was the loss moving things with her mind. She found out soon after her and Steve tracked down Kruger. The brunette attempted to make a pen float in the air, focusing the best she could, but it didn't move an inch. It was the only thing she lost, still being able to heal herself and others.
Other than that, Maggie felt different. The serum gave her an energy she didn't have before. When she ran after Kruger, she didn't even break a sweat and felt as if she was a feather in the wind. While Steve's specialty was strength, Maggie's was speed and flexibility. It felt amazing.
Maggie and Steve sat in a small office as nurses took blood sample from them. They sampled Maggie first and the sight of needles made her nauseous. Another thing that made her nauseous was seeing the syringe fill with her own blood.
"Think you got enough?" Steve asked after they took blood sample from him.
"Any hope of reproduction a program is locked in both of your genetic codes. But without Dr Erskine, it could take years," Peggy said as she walked into the room.
"He deserved more than this," Maggie said as her Steve got up.
"If it could only work twice, he'd be proud it was you two."
Peggy turned to leave the room and led the two super-soldiers into the tech lab.
"Hydra. I'm sure you've been reading our briefings," Colonel Phillips said, loud enough for the three of them to hear.
"I'm on number of committees, Colonel," Senato Brandyt responded.
"Hydra is the Nazi deep science division. It's led by Johann Schmidt. But has much bigger ambitions," Peggy informed.
"Hydra's basically a cult. They worship Schmidt, they think he's invincible," the Colonel continued.
"So, what are you gonna do about it?" Brandt asked.
"Spoke to the President this morning. As of today, the SSR is being retailed.
"Colonel?" Peggy asked.
"We are taking the fight to Hydra. Pack your bags, Agent Cart. You too, Stark. You're flying to London tonight," Phillips told the group.
"Sir, if you're going after Schmidt, I want in," Steve spoke.
"I would like to go as well," Maggie said after.
"You two are experiments. You're going to Alamogordo," Phillips told them.
"The serum worked," Steve stated.
"I asked for an army and all I got were you two. You are not enough."
The Colonel walked away, not saying another word. Maggie stepped forward about to give Phillips a piece of her mind. Before she could, Steve pulled her back, trying to keep her calm.
"With all due respect to the Colonel, I think we may be missing the point. I've seen you guys in action. More importantly, the country's seen it," Senator Brandt, joining Steve's side. "Paper," he commanded and his aide showed Steve and Maggie the newspaper. "The enlistment lines have been around the block since your picture hit the newsstands. You don't take soldiers, a symbol like that, and hide'em in a lab. Do you two want to serve your country on the most important battlefield of the war?"
