CHAPTER ONE: THE BEGINNING OF FATE
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
1938
THE YEAR WAS 1938
Sixteen year old Maggie Shelby was waiting in a diner not far from her house. It was a cold day in Brooklyn. The sky was covered in grey, the sun nowhere to be seen. She was on a date with her recent beau, Oliver, who was almost forty minutes late. In all honesty, she was going to break up with him that day.
Thanks to her friend from school, Inez, Maggie learned that Oliver cheated on her with another girl. When he finally arrived, Maggie was already telling him that she was through was him. Oliver then decided to follow after her and beg her to reconsider.
"Baby, please. Nothing happened between me and Annette! I swear!" Oliver repeated.
"Oliver, I really don't care. I'm tired of hearing your excuses," Maggie said coldly, still walking away.
Oliver's face dropped, "come on, Maggie, you know I would never hurt you."
"Oliver, don't you understand? I don't want to hear it." The Shelby girl continued to walk, her Birmingham accent noticeable.
"Hey, you don't get to walk away from me!" He shouted as he stopped walking.
"Oh yeah?" Maggie asked amused. "Watch me."
The brunette continued to walk away but Oliver continued to follow after her. Honestly, he was starting to get on her nerves and she was about to show him what happens when you keep provoking a Shelby.
"Baby, please give me another chance!" Oliver begged.
"I don't know why you are still following me, Oliver. I'm walking away and you're supposed to be walking the other way."
That made Oliver mad. He was getting impatient and decided to stop and start releasing the anger from her rejection.
"All of you British scum think you're all high and mighty, don't you? That you can just come to our country and act like you belong here. Nobody wants you here."
Maggie stopped in her tracks from his words. Oliver gave a smile, hoping his venomous words got to her. But her reaction ended up being one he didn't want.
"You know you're not the first to tell me that and you certainly won't be the last," Maggie said coldly. She began to walk away as she spoke again. "Tell Annette I said hi. And maybe she can teach how to be a better kisser."
Her words left Oliver dropping his jaw to the ground. However, Maggie continued to walk away with a smirk. She walked past the alley right beside her house and heard noises coming from inside. She looked to see two boys aggressively fighting, though the larger one had more dominance over the other one.
The smaller boy had short blonde hair and bright blue eyes. His figure was scrawnier than Maggie had ever seen. Maggie had seen him at school before, but she couldn't remember his name. Just that he always picked fights with bullies and tried to be a hero. He fell to the ground but was quick to get back up and refused defeat.
"Oh come on, little man. Just give up, you can't beat me," the taller boy said while the smaller one wiped blood away from his lip.
"I could do this all day," the smaller boy said, shaking his head.
Before the taller boy swung again, Maggie decided to get involved.
