CHAPTER SIX: First Training

FOUR DAYS LATER

CAMP LEHIGH

MILITARY UNIFORMS WERE QUITE UNCOMFORTABLE.

Maggie learned that fast, although the one she wore fit the male body type. They didn't have one to fit females since she was the only female other than Peggy Carter in Camp Lehigh. She stood at the left end of the group with Steve standing on her right side. His uniform was almost as baggy as hers, but he was a scrawny guy and she was petite.

The other men in their group gave Maggie a side eye. One called Hodge gave her a wolf whistle when she passed by him earlier. And the more he tried to cat call her it responded in her giving him the middle fingers.

"Recruits! Attention!" Peggy announced, making Maggie and the soldiers stand up straight in position. "Gentlemen, I'm agent Carter. I supervise all operations for this division." As she introduced herself, she gave Maggie a nod.

"What's with the accent, Queen Victoria? Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army," Hodge said, gaining everyone's attention.

"What's your name, soldier?" Peggy asked Hodge.

"Gilmore Hodge, Your Majesty." His reply was snarky. In all honesty, it made Maggie consider punching him in his jugular.

"Step forward, Hodge," Peggy instructed and Hodge did it. "Put your right foot forward."

"We gonna wrasse? Cause I got a few moves you'll like," Hodge said, giving her a wink.

Peggy then punched him hard in the face. The action made Maggie smile. It made her like her fellow countrywomen much more. That's when Colonel Phillips pulled up.

"Agent Carter," he addressed her.

"Colonel Phillips," Peggy addressed back.

"I see you're breaking in the candidates. That's good!" He then turned his attention to Hodge. "Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention 'til somebody comes to tell you what to do."

"Yes sir," was all Hodge said, getting up up and back in line.

Phillips began to address the recruits. "General Patton had said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going tot win this war because we have the best men." He paused when he saw Steve and Maggie. Then looked over at Peggy and Dr Erskine. "And because they're gonna get better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world

Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with two men. At the end of this week, we will choose those men. They will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers."

Maggie clenched her jaw, not hearing him once acknowledge her presence. All he spoke of were men. It gave her more fuel to the fire and show all them that she could fight like a man could. She would prove them all wrong because she simply could.

After Phillips finished his speech, the training began. The first course was climbing a large net. It was different economic shares between Maggie and Steve. Maggie had already finished on the ground, moving swift and beating all the men that even started before her. Steve, however, struggled and was already falling back with his leg stuck in the neck.

The next course was a little more difficult. They recruits had to crawl under wire while carrying guns. For Maggie it was a little harder than the first course. Before Hodge could do it to Steve, the brunette managed to kick a post holding wires. The wires fell onto him and Steve gave Maggie a grateful look. Gif didn't like ugly, and neither did Maggie.
