CHAPTER FIFTEEN: GLORIOUS PURPOSE

MAY 4TH, 2012

2 YEARS LATER

FREEDOM.

The one thing Maggie had asked for in 67 years, it was freedom. After 67 years of being separated from her family, being experimented on, brainwashed into being a weapon, and coming in and out of cryo-freeze, freedom was in her grasp. All because she was sent on a mission to assassinate Nick Fury by Hydra, being awoken after being put under in 2005. She didn't succeed and was brought in by Clint Barton. Instead of killing her on the spot, he instantly recognized her and gave her mercy.

After she was apprehended, Fury approached Maggie with an offer to work as a SHIELD agent. If she accepted the offer, she was to be pardoned in the United States and offered protection from Hydra. Maggie saw it as her chance to finally escape Hydra's grasp and she wasn't going to miss it. For the first couple months of her and Fury's deal, Maggie was under house arrest at the SHIELD base and began training. Not to mention, Maggie had to give herself a new identity to cover up her past with Hydra. She wasn't Agent Liberty or the Prodigy anymore, but Agent Maggie Barnes.

A year later, Fury tried to get Tony Stark's help to bring back the Avengers Initiative. While he did, Maggie started training under an agent named Natasha Romanoff, who soon became one of her mentors. Before Natasha became her trainer and mentor, Maggie always observed the redhead in the Triskelion training rooms to see the kind of skills she had. Natasha was the hardest person for Maggie to beat in fight in a long time. The last person who ever defeated her was him.

Late one night, Maggie had gotten off her flight and got in a black SUV that took her to the secret SHIELD base in New Mexico. Fury had suggested her presence. Maggie came armed just in case, feeling something was going to happen before she left. She wore the leather jacket that Natasha bought her, a white tank top, black jeans and her black combat boots. The agent had a holster belt around her hips equipped with two guns and multiple bullets. Ragnell was in it's sheath on her belt as well. Oh how happy she was to be reunited with her sword.

When the car arrived at the base, her side of the door opened and she was immediately greeted by Phil. A smile came to her lips as they met face to face. Coulson smiled as well, pleased to see

"Hey, Phil," Maggie greeted casually as she got out of the car.

"Maggie," Coulson greeted as he led her inside. "Sorry to call you and drag out of Malibu on such short notice. Director Fury needs to speak with you."

"Welcome back, Agent Barnes," an agent, Maria Hill said as Maggie and Phil walked in.

"Agent Hill," Maggie greeted before her and Coulson caught up with Fury.

Maggie felt the ground slightly shake below her, something to worry about. That didn't feel like an ordinary earthquake. She felt something coming...something bad. It got worse when they arrived at the research face while people were evacuating.

"How bad is it?" Fury asked while the three of them walked.

"That's the problem, sir. We don't know," Coulson answered, the response making Maggie want to make a sarcastic remark. "Dr Selvig read an energy surge from the Tesseract four hours ago."
