A short story:

Once upon a time, there lived a Queen who left her kingdom to pursue a quest in a faraway land. This land was a spectacular place, full of breathtaking scenery, and vibrant in colour. The people there received her with kindness and hospitality. Each morning she awoke to the cheerful melody of birds, each evening she quieted with the glow of the setting sun, and each day she fell a little more in love.

As her affections grew more and more for this wonderful place, they began to grow also for a humble local artist. The Artist too, was captivated by the Queen's gentle personality and beauty. He implored her to pursue her quest by his side, to stay in the land and make a home together. So the Queen and the Artist were married, but they lived far from happily ever after.

Their simple life there together proved to be very challenging, and the Queen was overwhelmed with a serious illness. Together with their newborn child, they packed up and moved to the Queen's homeland, but this did not free them from their problems.

As years went by, they were blessed with two more children, but the Queen continued to struggle with her illness, and the Artist struggled to adjust to life in the kingdom. He did not speak the language of the people, nor did he understand the culture, and he felt far removed from everything that he once knew. He immersed himself in his paintings and in potions to numb the pain.

In time, bitterness and resentment filled their home, much to the detriment of the whole family, which split into five broken pieces. But through the trials, the children grew, and they developed coping mechanisms of their own. One became a skilled and honorable swordsman, one a chaotic vigilante, and one...

These thoughts were interrupted by a bright light shining in the distance. Or rather, two bright lights. And they were getting closer. Time seemed to slow down, and the deer cyborg's mind raced faster and faster as she darted along the road toward the lights. An alien and a spaceman emerged from the pod, certainly alarmed by her presence. In fact, the deer recognized them, as she had been listening to the campfire stories and had learned much about the creatures that inhabited this place. Still, it was unexpected to run into them in this manner.

She was grateful for the youngling's recognition, and that it had been enough to disarm the alien. In all fairness, she could see why the alien had mistaken her for an android. He was right to be protective of his friends, and she herself well understood the need to be defensive. As it was, the full magnitude of the threat she could pose was yet to be revealed...

The end.
