Elias
The hospital released most of the family except for Romeo, Nate, Gabe, Ryden, and Dixon. They would remain in the burn unit for a while. Once they healed, then they would need skin grafts. The doctors wanted to ensure they didn't get an infection first.
Owen felt a little better to go with me to meet backers for the reconstruction. However, he moved slower than usual. "Hey, unlike you, I got thrown through the air like a rag doll."
I stopped and turned to Owen. "Be happy you're here and not at home."
"Good point." Owen moved his head to the side. "Dealing with Wendy's wrath hasn't been fun."
"Well, almost dying isn't fun for anyone."
"Oh, haha." Owen rolled his eyes as he used his walker to move.
Luckily, we have elevators at the company. Owen walked like Patrick drove—slow.
We took the elevator to our floor, stepped out, and walked to my office. I should have gotten Owen a motorized scooter. We would have arrived faster.
Our financial backers were waiting in my office for us. Owen entered, moved to my desk chair, and eased down.
"Seriously?" I asked.
"Unlike you, I'm recovering from an explosion. You can sacrifice your precious chair for once," Owen said.
"You're lucky you're injured. Tori would hurt me if I kicked your ass."
"Wait until I'm better. Then we can go our rounds with each other."
Someone cleared their throat to get our attention.
"I hate to break up this love fest between you, but can we get down to business?" An older man asked.
"Sorry," I said.
"Elias, meet Junior Frazier, Elijah Shaw, and Matthew Jones," Owen said.
I shook their hands.
"We spoke to JJ about your family's businesses. We want to help as a thank you," Junior said. "Uncle Ryan put me in charge of the family. He stressed loyalty. My dad had a fondness for your grandmother Maggie and Uncle Nixon."
"Grammy mentioned someone named Frazier. I didn't know who she meant."
"Our families' paths have crossed many times throughout the years. Did you know your grandmother worked for our aunt Kate?"
"Wait. Isn't that the bakery at the college?"
Junior nodded. "Kate gave it to my dad when she retired. It's how your family's bakery got started."
"My son, Raphael, wanted to combine the bakery and restaurant."
"Raphael worked at our family's bakery."
I nodded in response.
"Mr. Harper, our fathers wanted peace. They suffered because our grandfather made bad business deals. We can't change the past. But we can move forward."
"Owen and I agreed after talking."
"I have a solution to both our situations."
Matthew pulled out a file and handed it to me. I opened it, and my brows shot up at the figures on the sheet.
"That should cover the material and labor. Send any invoices to me. My family will send a check," Junior said.
"That's a very generous offer," I said.
"It's the least I can do."
Something caught my eye. I pulled out a piece of paper as my breath caught in my throat. "This is a receipt for medical bills."
