No matter how I think about it, the sudden change in Kayra's behavior doesn't make any sense. And even if she wanted, she wouldn't go as far as changing everything about her. She was even going to a club. A C.L.U.B, I repeat. It was unusual.
Something in my brain snapped and I realized what I was doing. Thinking about Kayra? Shit! I had better things to put my mind into. I had tons of assignments to complete and turn in before new year.
I tried working on my assignment with every ounce of concentration left in me which was already minuscule, when Asher entered the room. He seemed in a good mood as he was humming to himself. The reason was probably Ruby. He must've met her.
Wait! Ruby! Ruby is her friend. And she even said there was something that day like 'Girl code' and it was before Kayra started acting strange. So, she must know something and she must've told him something.
"Hey, Asher!" I plastered on a smile, calling out Asher from his daydream.
His nose scrunched, when he saw me. "Don't smile like that, you're creeping me out." This asshole. My fists balled but I resisted the urge to punch him. I need him.
I put up with him. "How was your date with Ruby?"
His eyebrows perked up. "Since when were you interested?"
Stop testing my patience, you asshole.
"Come on, I am just asking." I forced a smile. You need him, Nolan. Don't hit him. Just don't. Why couldn't he just answer my question instead of questioning my motives? Though they weren't genuine, I agree.
"Yeah, that's the strange part. You are asking me about my date." He hung his coat on the stand.
I tried to look as uninterested and casual as possible. "Did she mention something about her friends?"
He pondered. "Umm, no. But she did say something."
My ears perked up, expecting to hear something valuable. "What?"
"She said and I quote,'Tell Nolan to not be mean to Kayra, or else he won't be there to do that anymore'-” he suddenly turned serious and I blinked a few times to ensure that what he said was real.
"-and as her boyfriend, I assure you, she's the woman of her words. So, don't take them lightly," he smiled and continued undressing himself as if he didn't just pass his girlfriend's death threat to me.
The bathroom door suddenly slammed and Jake came out. Asher's eyes widened and he seemed taken aback seeing Jake here. Of course, he would be, Jake didn't live with us and we never had sleepovers.
Jake threw a glance at me before speaking to Asher. "The electricity was out at my apartment. So, I am crashing here tonight.”
Asher mouthed an 'oh' as Jake walked in front of the mirror drying his hair with a towel. While Asher went in the bathroom to get fresh, I was still sitting on the edge of the couch with my fingers intertwined and my open laptop resting ignored on the table.
"You must not know." Jake caught my attention. He seemed almost uninterested and continued drying his hair.
"Huh?"
"I heard you guys talk. Asher and you. You wanted to ask about Kayra, didn't you?" He asked. I hated how he caught on things so quickly but right now wasn't the time to do that.
"Do you know something?" I didn't bother asking him how he came to that conclusion that I was asking about her. I had to stop beating around the bush to get straight answers.
"She's going back to India,” he met my eyes. “Forever.” He didn't seem to be lying, judging by the serious look in his eyes. But even without that, Jake never lies or jokes at all.
