"Okay, you need to elaborate right fucking now," Enid told her as Yoko finally woke up to listen.

"What's there to elaborate?" Kali asked. She thought she was pretty clear. She's dying. What else is there to say.

"Why are you dying?" Bianca clarified as she put back on her amulet. "Because coughing up blood and dying at seventeen ain't exactly normal."

"It is in the organization." At their confused faces she continued. "We're experimented on for years and are given powers we're not supposed to have. Do you think that comes without repercussions?"

"You're dying because the experiments have made you sick?" Enid questioned.

Kali nodded. "Most kids never make it to my age. But the ones that do all get sick."

"So how long till you...die?" Divina hesitantly asked.

Kali shrugged. "I don't know. No one's ever lived to see the end of it. The kids who live long enough to get sick all end up killing themselves by losing a match on purpose."

"That's," Yoko hesitated, "dark."

"Such is life in the organization."

Enid didn't even know what to say as her wolf whined inside of her. She had no words. Kali is...dying? And she doesn't even seem to care. Why doesn't she care? There has to be a way to cure her, right? They can find it. Kali doesn't have to die. She won't. Enid won't let her. She'll fight death himself if she has to.

"Does Wednesday already know?" Bianca asked.

"No. It's never come up. The sickness only began that day in the library when I attacked her and Enid."

"You have to tell her," Divina pushed.

"Why? It's not like it's important."

"Yes, it is!" Enid finally found her words. "She needs to know. We can work together to find a cure."

"There isn't one."

"You don't know that! There—there—there has to be one!" Enid grabbed Kali's right hand with both of hers and squeezed. "I can't—" she shook her head and closed her eyes to stop the tears that were forming. "You can't just give up."

Kali's eyes dropped to their hands. She raised her left to cup the back of Enid's right. "Giving up would mean there was a battle to fight to begin with. But there isn't. Death is inevitable."

The tears fell from Enid's closed eyes as her wolf inside cried with her. For some reason the prospect of losing Kali was too much. Too painful. Enid could feel her heart wrench in her chest. She didn't understand why though. She had only became friends with Kali that day. How can she be so attached to her already?

"Why are you crying?"

Enid chuckled sadly at Kali's question. It was what Wednesday had asked her too one time. She looked up at Kali and met her confused eyes. "Because I don't want you to die."

"But I do want to die."

Enid froze as Yoko asked, "What? You wanna die?"

Kali looked back down at her and Enid's hands. They were so warm. "I always have. And once I save Rhea I can."

"So what, you're just gonna kill yourself?" Bianca asked incredulously.

"I won't need to. The sickness will do it for me."

Enid squeezed Kali's hand. "No. You're not dying. We'll find a way to cure you. Everything will be okay. Alright?"

Kali didn't believe that for one second, but instead she said, "Alright." For some reason she wasn't comfortable talking about this anymore. Maybe it was the tears in Enid's eyes. They way she looked at her silently begging for her to choose to live. Either way, Kali wanted this conversation to end. "Can we go back to sleep now?"
