THIRD PERSON POV

y/n had never really never considered what she'd say or do if given the chance to see matt again after completely shutting him out of her life in the last two months upon the announcement of his new relationship. she kept close contact with chris and nick, vaguely explaining why she had pulled away from him, both of them being rather understanding of her heartache.

she never wanted to pull away from matt. to lock up all her feelings in a tiny, overfilling box in the back of her mind and figuratively throw away the key. she had wanted to tell him everything she felt, she wanted to scream her lungs every time he cried in his arms after every single girl he had been had broken heart that she was right there in front of him.

but she had never wanted to take advantage of his vulnerability and make him feel like she had to love him back, so she kept quiet. but it grew increasingly difficult to shield her heart from what it yearned for.

so she left matt's room the last night she was with him at nearly four in the morning, without so much as a two word explanation and never looked back.

but she was forced to look the boy that had inadvertently broken her heart in the eyes one last time, and she was terrified that they were no longer going to hold the same warmth toward her that they had from the moment they met.

y/n sighed deeply as she fidgeted the sleeves of her leather jacket, looking around the expensive elevator as it made its way to rooftop deck that the invitation had said to go to. the elevator came to a slow halt and with one last sigh and shrug of her shoulders she picked up the three gift bags she brought along, and watched as the door opened, revealing the elaborately decorated deck.

she smiled softly at the neon sign that said "HAPPY TWENTIETH BIRTHDAY" in large, fluorescent white letters, remembering how matt had said he wanted one of those for his birthday one day when they were younger.

she admired the twinkling fairy lights strung along various surfaces and tables, laughed at the birthday party gimmicks lining every table, and her heart dropped momentarily at the sight of her favourite drink on the menu that topped the middle of every table.

looking around she spotted madi, who waved her over with a comforting smile. y/n wrapped the shorter girl in a tight hug, mumbling short nothings about how much she had missed her.

"can you show the gift section, i wanna set these aside." y/n hummed, gesturing to presents in her hand, with a nod madi led the way to a table that was nearly toppling over with gifts from friends and family.

after bidding her friend goodbye, y/n lost herself in the party, having yet to run into one of the guests of honour, silently thanking whoever had them occupied. growing overwhelmed, she excused herself from the group of girls she was catching up and made her way to the empty side of the rooftop patio, and made herself at home in one of the cushioned patio couches.

with a saddened smile, she flicked through the forbidden folders of pictures of her and matt, feeling her heart shrink and swell each time she was met with their younger faces smiling warmly back at her. she gasped softly as the picture she was dreading appeared on screen. it was a picture of matt and her cuddled up on a couch much like the one she wasn't currently taking, their heads thrown back as they laughed at chris' stupid joke. the only source of light in the photo was from the fire they were sat in front of.

"i remember that night like it was yesterday." a gentle voice spoke up from behind, making the girl nearly jump out of her skin. clambering to her feet she turned around to meet nick's eyes.

"nick!" she exclaimed, pulling him into a tight hug, whispering a soft happy birthday as they pulled apart.

"you're technically not supposed to be over here but i came to get you because we're cutting the cake soon."

"how is he, nick?"

"he's good, despite that him and emily broke up a couple weeks ago." he replied as they walked back to the main area of the party, his arm slung over their shoulders as they kept talking about things she had missed out on in the last couple weeks.

she made her way to stand in the back of the crowd, but nick had other ideas.

"nuh uh, you're coming to stand with us." nick chuckled, pulling her behind him with his hand around her wrist. looking up, her breath hitched in her throat as she met matt's eyes, his widening slightly as he saw her again for the first time in a long while.

as they stood there matt couldn't keep his eyes off her, the sight of her drowning out the sound of the crowd singing the timely lyrics of happy birthday to the triplets.

y/n disappeared from everyone as they handed out the cake, causing matt to rush out a thank you speech before going to look for her. he found her leaning against the glass railing of the deck, looking down at the busy city below her.

"so i don't even get a hello?"

"matt please don't."

"no, i'm going to do this. you completely cut me out of your life, i haven't spoken to the person i considered my best friend outside of my brothers in two fucking months. and for what? because you didn't want to meet my girlfriend? do you know how fucking selfish that is?"

"selfish? was i selfish when i put you back together every time a girl broke your heart while i was in love with you? when i put your happiness above mine and never told you how i felt because i saw how happy a new girl made you? i'm sorry if me putting myself and my feelings first, just one fucking time, was selfish but loving someone who doesn't love me back was killing me matt."

"y/n, did you really, truly think i didn't love you back?"
