Time was one thing Madison had never paid attention to before now. Sure, she knew when she had to be at work or school but her life had always been free of time constraints. She had never focused on the clock as she lived in the moment choosing to revel in the feeling that life gave her. The exhaustion in her body told her when it was time to be done surfing, the bell ringing through the evening air told her it was time to come in for the night, and the love she felt towards JJ was something she'd never get enough of. Time was one thing a teenager should have never had to worry about, until now.

1:47 p.m.

JJ drove towards the dump, Madison's hand wrapped firmly around the police radio as she turned every knob trying to get it to work but as Pogue luck would have it the battery died. She angrily chucked it in the backseat, her eyes flicking back to the clock for the hundredth time. Two cop cars with their sirens blaring and lights flashing flew past them heading in the opposite direction. JJ kept his eyes straight on the road, not wanting to chance even looking at them while she ducked down in her seat as much as she could.

"That's a good sign," he tried to reassure her, resting a hand on her thigh as she got resituated again. "They're still looking."

Madison chewed her bottom lip as she stared at the scenery passing by. The longer he was on the island the bigger the chance was of him getting caught. He couldn't go to jail. There was no way she would be able to handle losing him. He was the only family she had left and while she wanted nothing more than to go with him, she knew she'd stay behind. It would be easier for her to do what she wanted without having to worry about any consequences or him getting involved if he was down in Mexico starting his new life.

"Hey," JJ glanced over to her before watching the road again, giving her knee a gentle squeeze. "He'll be fine with the Phantom. She'll get out quick. I just..." he trailed off, trying to find the right words while he could, taking advantage of the time he had alone with her. "I need you with me, Maddie."

Her brows furrowed in confusion, "I'm right here."

"No, I know, that's not what I mean..." he chanced a look over to her again, hoping she could see how serious he was, "Listen, I know there is a lot of shit going on but I saw, and keep seeing, that look in your eye-"

She immediately cut him off, going as far as removing his hand that still rested on her thigh. "Stop."

"Maddie," he wasn't about to give up that easily, not when less than six hours ago he thought he had lost her forever.

He could see her out of the corner of his eye, her whole body shifting in her seat at the uncomfortable topic of conversation, "No, JJ, we aren't doing this right now."

"Why didn't you stay in the car?" He refused to let her talk her way out of this one and his hand twitched as it rested in his lap, wanting nothing more than to reach out to her. She didn't answer and he wasn't sure if she was trying to avoid the topic of conversation all together or if she actually didn't know what he was asking. "Back at my house, why wouldn't you wait in the car?"
