Luke Maybank had never aspired to be anything. He didn't have hopes or dreams for the future growing up, he had no ambition to do better or even be better, and he was perfectly fine living on the Cut in a broken down trailer with busted windows and no front steps. The only father figure he ever had in his life was whatever drug dealer came in and out of his mother's room at all hours of the night. Their trailer constantly littered and stock piled with different pills and powders, the only food in the refrigerator being leftover take out, and he was lucky if he got to take a shower as the water was turned off more than it was ever on.

And then he met Evangaline.

His whole world turned on its axis and suddenly he wanted more than the shitty life his mother had provided him with. He wanted to do better, he wanted to be better, and all for her. She was the epitome of everything he could have ever dreamt of. She was one of the best surfers on the island and definitely wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty as she worked under a truck, her blonde hair a mess of curls on top of her head as sweat and grease coated her face. She was loyal to a fault, ready to help anyone at a moment's notice, and she had broken down a wall inside of him that he didn't even know existed.

Luke had slept around, getting his fix from the girls with no standards, but she was different. She had sought him out. She had shown up at his place in a pale green summer dress that hung loosely from her shoulders and gave him no choice but to go fishing with her. What she saw in him he never knew but she was persistent and didn't take no for an answer. They spent more time talking and finishing the case of beer she had brought with her than actually paying attention to the lines but that was when it all started and from that moment on there was no turning back.

They had argued like any couple did but they always found their way back to each other, their apologies always in the form of sex rather than words, which led to her getting pregnant. It only ended up being another thing for them to fight about though. He had never imagined himself as a father, if he was being honest kids annoyed the ever living shit out of him, but it was something she wanted more than anything. She wanted to be a mom, needed to be one, for the sole fact that she would have someone that truly loved her unconditionally.

Her parents passed away unexpectedly, leaving her the house and it was just the push Luke needed to give in and accept the fact that this was going to be his new future. His kid would have a place to live, his own room, and just maybe he'd be able to break the cycle. Maybe it would be enough if he just stuck around. Evangaline would be there for everything that came along with taking care of a baby and when the kid got old enough he could teach him or her how to tie a bowline or how to completely rebuild an engine.

But being a mother wasn't everything she thought it would be. There was that unconditional love she had longed for but that feeling fell short. The constant crying, the need to be held, the added stress of needing more than beer and takeout in the house, and it seemed like everyday they needed more diapers that they just couldn't afford. She had lost her independence. Luke wasn't the affectionate type and as long as she came home to him every night she was free to do as she pleased but that all came to an end when JJ was born. She was tied to her son, trapped in a house she had longed to get away from, and one day she finally had enough. Evangaline packed absolutely nothing, the only thing she grabbed on the way out the door was a stuffed whale she had given JJ on his third birthday, and never looked back.
