"Maddie," Pope harshly whispered and crouched down, his eyes scanning their surroundings as he followed the youngest Routledge to the side window of the library. "Madison, stop! This is... we can't..."

She hushed him for the thousandth time since they had gotten out of her car which was halfway down the block at his request and she rolled her eyes again. She used her pocket knife and carefully slid it between the window panes, working it back and forth until the lock unlatched. She offered him a victorious smile and pushed the window open before pulling herself up and climbing through. When he didn't follow right away she stuck her head back out, "Are you coming or are you gonna let me walk around this dark, probably haunted, library all by my lonesome self?"

"Yes, because saying it's haunted is gonna make me want to go in there," Pope complained the whole time as he pulled himself up and not so gracefully fell onto his shoulder once he was through the window. "This is breaking and entering and if we get arrested it's gonna be a-"

Madison took a random book off the shelf and whacked him in the chest with it, successfully cutting him off before putting it back, "Jesus, Pope. It's the freaking library it's not like we are robbing a bank."

"How did you even know how to do that with your knife?" He asked softly, his eyes landing on every dark corner just waiting for the librarian to pop out.

She simply shrugged, checking the top of every row to see what section they were in, "My dad taught me. Never know when it's going to come in handy. I can teach you if you want."

"Uh, no... no, I'm good on that," he bumped into a cart full of books and nearly jumped out of his skin. He put his hand on his chest, his heart beating a mile a minute, as he did his best to ignore the youngest Routledge's laugh. "Why am I here again?"

Madison cut down one of the aisles and used the flashlight on her cell phone to scan the books, "Because and I quote 'you're insane, you're not going to the library at two in the morning alone' and now here we are. I told you you didn't have to come. You know, just because there are thrillers two sections over doesn't mean Bloody Mary is going to suddenly appear and take me out. A library is perfectly safe."

"Please don't say that again."

She smirked as she faced him, holding her phone so that the flashlight was right under her chin, "Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary."

"Great, thank you for that," Pope snatched the phone out of her hand. "If I die it's on you. Can we please just find this book and get out of here?"

Madison had to bite her bottom lip to keep from bursting out laughing again as Pope checked over his shoulder every couple of seconds. "Check these shelves, I'll check the ones over here. It's called 'Events in the Days of Sir Thomas Gresham' by William Kingston."
