It had been twenty-seven minutes since JJ walked away from her, twenty-seven whole minutes, and it felt like she was stuck in an alternate universe. Madison tried to see where he was coming from and knew he was right, she would have lost her shit if he had gone to Avery, but she really was just trying to help the best way she knew how. The one way that would keep everyone she loved out of jail and safe. It was one mistake, one wrong decision when she was actually trying to do the right thing, and it only ended up being the start of her downfall.
The ride to the senior living facility was filled with an uncomfortable silence and besides John B driving no one was in their 'usual' spots. Madison sat in the passenger seat, her feet up on the dash as the wind blew through her hair, ignoring everyone back there as they were annoying the ever living shit out of her except for Pope. She had borrowed a clean shirt from him so that she didn't look like a serial killer even though John B had offered to drop her off at the Chateau for a shower or clean clothes of her own but she just shook her head and slammed the passenger door shut as an answer.
JJ sat in the back, deliberately positioning himself as much as physically possible away from Madison. Despite having already torn through two papers, he remained fixated on the joint in his hand. He pulled out his last one and hyper focused on getting it just right. He needed to relax, to stop channeling his anger into rolling his joints too tight. No matter what challenges he faced, he could always rely on Madison to be there for him, without ever even needing to ask. She was the one person he trusted with his life, until now. Now, she had chosen someone else over him, just like everyone else always did. And not just anyone, but a Kook, someone who could offer her everything he would never be able to.
"Guys, the thing that Limbrey said, I don't think she meant to let it slip." Pope tried to break the awkward tension, knowing if there was one thing that would get everyone talking again it would be about another mystery that needed to be solved. "She said the key leads to the Cross of Santo Domingo."
Sarah tried to meet John B's eyes in the rearview mirror and if he noticed he completely ignored her, dealing with his own Kook verse Pogue feelings at the moment. She sighed and rolled her eyes, not understanding why he was so upset with her when all she did was thank Topper for saving her life. It wasn't like she had sought him out like Madison did with Kelce. "Are we supposed to know what that is?"
"I'm guessing it's some sort of historical artifact of great importance," Pope deadpanned and Madison almost outright laughed at the sarcasm instead only letting out a little scoff. Even Pope, who usually kept a level head, was over all the bullshit in the Twinkie. The Pogues would never completely go their separate ways, never turn their backs when one of them needed the other, and yet this was the biggest crack they have ever had in the group.
