Madison had expected JJ to keep her locked up, to have her never leave his sight, or maybe even have her committed but instead he turned to alcohol because in trying to fix herself she had broken him. He'd stumble in at all hours of the night not even making it inside half the time instead passing out on the porch, or the front steps, or even once on the ground next to his bike that he insisted on still driving while intoxicated. She had tried to hide the keys but it didn't matter, it only started a screaming match with him snatching them away from her anyways.
She had called Kiara and they drove around looking for her abandoned car and she sighed in relief that it was still there, keys still in the ignition, just out of gas. The tree she thought she had hit ended up being an overgrown bush and besides a few scratches in the paint her car was perfectly fine. It shocked her really, not expecting something to actually go her way for once.
Tuesday had come and gone, deliveries for Heyward weren't as bad as she had expected. It was easy to fake a smile for a two minute interaction with a Kook but now that Friday had rolled around and she was expected to work in the store it was harder than she thought it would be. At first she worked on simple things like unloading a shipment, auditing it to make sure that everything that was ordered was received, and then stocking the shelves. It actually took up a good part of her shift with Heyward keeping an annoyingly close eye on her, muttering in her ear to 'fake it until she makes it' every time the smile would start to fall from her face.
An hour and forty seven minutes was all she had left but as she watched the clock on the wall she swore the second hand went backwards before it finally ticked forward. It was bad enough the side eye she would get from the guy in the corner who held a lemon in his hand for the last five minutes or the elderly woman giving Pope her order who clutched her purse so tight that her knuckles were white as if she was scared Madison was going to rip it away from her. And that's when she could no longer block out the whispers.
That's that boy's sister such a shame.
Do you think it runs in the family?
I heard she was in on it.
Her brother is a psychopath.
What teenager murders the sheriff?
Probably why her dad left too.
It felt as though the temperature in the store had gone up ten degrees, the walls closing in on her, as the whispers were like screams resounding in her head. She stumbled through the store, knocking over a display of postcards, as she nearly ran out the back door. Heyward took over for Pope, motioning for his son to go after her. The youngest Heyward got outside in time to see Madison sitting at the picnic table hunched over with her head in her hands.
