WHEN KADEN GOT HOME that night, the last thing he was expecting was to find Blake on the couch, sobbing.

His brows furrowed as he walked further inside and approached his brother who didn't look up upon his arrival. Kaden knelt down, so he'd be of the same height as Blake. "Hey," his voice was unusually soft, "what's wrong?"

Blake sniffled, still not lifting his head. He kept his face buried in between his hands as he wept. Kaden had never seen him cry like that before.

"Blake," he raised his hand and ran it through his brother's hair which only made him sob harder. Kaden frowned, "tell me what happened," he pressed, "talk to me."

Blake swallowed, finally looking up. His eyes were red and puffy, there were both fresh and dried strains of tears on his cheeks. He had been crying for a while now. Kaden's heart ached in his chest. He loved his brother more than anything, seeing him like that mad him physically sick.

"Did something happen at school?" Kaden asked, narrowing his eyes at Blake who shook his head. "Okay," he continued threading his hair, "then what is it?"

Instead of replying, Blake threw himself at him, wrapping his arms around his neck and hugging him tightly as if he was scared if he'd let go, he would disappear. Kaden frowned at the sudden action, but he hugged him back nonetheless.

Blake buried his face in the crook of Kaden's neck, his tears falling onto his shirt, soaking it but he said nothing.

"You're worrying me," Kaden muttered after a few seconds of silence. "Please, tell me what's going on? Whatever it is, I promise I'll help."

"I've never heard you be this nice to anyone before," Blake's voice had a teasing tone in it although his voice was hoarse from all the crying he'd done. "Are you growing soft or something?"

"Are you gonna tell me what's up," he pulled away just enough to look at his face but he still kept his arms around him, "or do I have to tickle the answers out of you?"

"Mom dropped by earlier," Blake answered, his voice dropping to a quieter tone. Kaden froze, anger filling him almost immediately. He said nothing, only grind his teeth as Blake continued, "did you know she was here? She came to see me. She said she misses me."

Kaden narrowed his eyes at him, having noticed the way he was looking at anywhere but him. "But that's not why you were crying, was it?"

"Partly," Blake mumbled, finally looking at him. "She apologised for being an absentee mom, and said she regrets not having said anything to grandpa when he dragged us here. Then she told me to come with her, to New York."

"And?" The lack of indifference Kaden was attempting to show didn't go unnoticed by Blake who shot him a smug grin. "I obviously said no as you can see, you're still stuck with my amazing ass. You'd miss me, admit it."

"Not even in the slightest bit," Kaden rolled his eyes but his grip tightened around him nonetheless. Blake's grin only widened, "sure, whatever you say."

"Now," Kaden pressed, "tell me what actually fucked your mood up."

Blake's amused expression fell, and was replaced by the same grim look he held onto his face a few minutes ago. "I– uh—" he gulped, his eyes darting around again, "I asked her why you hate her and dad so much and she told me everything. And I mean, everything." His grey eyes filled with sympathy, sadness and other emotions Kaden didn't want to decipher, "I am so sor—"

"No," Kaden interrupted with a shake of his head, his breath hitched in the back of his throat. He let go of him, dropping his arms back to his sides as he stood up. "Fuck, why did you ask that? Why the hell would she even tell you?" He ran a hand through his own hair in frustration. "I'm going to kill her, I'm going to—"

Blake placed a hand on his arm, "please, stop."

"You're a kid, for fuck's sake." Kaden looked down at him, "that's not something you tell to a child. It's none of your business and it's none of hers—"

"I asked because I was tired of being in the dark!" Blake exclaimed, "you told me you hate them, you told me not to speak of them— but you never told me why. I wanted to know. I'm sorry if I overstepped, but I was tired of being so fucking clueless of everything." He took a deep breath, "I chose to stay with you, in this shitty place. Fuck mom, fuck dad, fuck everyone else. Who knows what would've happened to me too, if I had stayed?  I love you, K. I really do. You're the best brother ever, I really, really am grateful for everything you've done for me."

"Unfortunately, I love you too," was all what Kaden said before Blake hugged him again. However, this time, he wrapped his arms around his waist as he wasn't of the same height as him. Kaden sighed, embracing him as well, "this is a one-time thing."

"We'll see," was what Blake said before he decided to ruin the moment by patting Kaden's ass making him scowl and pushing him away. "Go get fucked," his words were drowned out by Blake's laugh filling the air.
