❝This is the start of something new. . . ❞MELODY
They begin to brush my hair away from my face, and lift it into a perfect tight bun. The girl by my side who is known by Lydia, according to her name tage, finishes off applying the white nail polish, then works on moving to my face. She already applied foundation to conceal my gaunt features, a soft brown eyeshadow is already set on my eyelids, bronzer, and highlighter are popping as well, and now she reaches for the eyeliner. Lydia draws a thin line across my lash line, then winges it at the end perfectly. She does the same for the second eye, and I'm amazed at how fast she is. Her makeup skills are shocking me to a high extinct. She still tries to make my look simple, by applying a nude lipstick to match my outfit that I wore only half an hour ago.
My hands tremble, and my stomach twists in knots. I breathe in and out to ease my nervousness, as I look at all the other contestants. They all look amazing and beautiful, a determined look dominating each one of their make up caked faces. Auditioning for the USA International Ballet Academy may be life threatening. If I get through tonight I'll be sent to New York (that is if I'm good enough). I'll sign a contract with the agency, assigning me coaches to make me better, and then I can start my own career. This has always been my dream ; dancing is who I am. To be a professional dancer is all I want, all I really need. I've been dancing since I was six years old. I would be very pleased and proud of myself if they accept me tonight, but there are too many talented people here. So, choosing me from the Top 5 might be a bit hard.
I feel a pair of cold hands pressing on my bare shoulder. I sigh, looking up at my brother, Harry, with stress written all over my face.
"You're going to be amazing, I know it." He smiles, his dimples showing.
"But, what if I mess up?" I frown.
"You won't." He reassures me. "You trained so hard for this, you won't mess up."
I sigh, and rub my forehead when someone barges through the door.
"Hello there, ladies." A familiar voice talks. I turn around to see Harry's and I bestfriend. The one and only Louis Tomlinson, is here in the flesh, flirting with the girls while trying to impress them with his good looks. My smile grows wider at the sight of him. Louis and I had a thing in the past when I was 15. We were in a relationship that lasted only one year. We couldn't work through our differences, plus it was a long distance relationship. He was living in Doncaster, while I was all the way here in Los Angeles.
Now, four years later we're still really good friends. And I'm very happy he's here supporting me on this special night.
"There's my talented beautiful girl!" He approaches us, his hands wide in the air engulfing me with a tight hug.
"Hi." I mumble against his chest.
We pull apart from the hug when Harry clears his throat loudly,"Hey, why the sad face?" Louis frowns.
"I'm—"
"She's worried she'll mess up." Harry interferes—like always—sighing then placing a protective hand around my waist. You see, Harry's like those lame overprotective brothers in cliché movies. Even though Louis is his bestfriend, he still acts protective around him. I guess not having parents to look after us, made him act this way.
Louis opens his mouth to talk, "There's nothing to worry about, love. You'll do great, I'm sure of it."
I smile, ready to rely back but get cut off when someone calls my name twice.
"Melody? Melody Styles? You're up in two minutes."
I wide my eyes in panic and turn to Harry, "No, no, no! Harry, I can't do this. What if I wasn't good enough? What if they don't like me? What if—"
"Shh! You're going to do alright, you're going to blow their minds. I believe in you." Harry says, boosting my confidence a little. He kisses my temple, then my right cheek. He whispers,"I believe in you, yeah?" I nod.
Harry hands me my mask, and I put it on. The judges outside might wonder why I will be wearing a mask, but it's a part of my costume. I don't like showing my whole identity, I get a bit insecure sometimes.
I make my way to the door, while following the assistant who called my name so she could lead me towards the stage. My heart's beating faster with every step I take, and my hands are sweating horribly.
"Go get them!" Louis suddenly screams, making me turn around in my tracks.
I grin, waving at him and Harry. This is it. I'm really doing this. There's nothing holding me back this time. No one's in my way. This is the day I've been waiting for. Tonight, everything might come true. Everything might change.
*****
I get out of the auditorium with a wide smile on my face, eyes sparkling, and heart thumping hard. I notice Harry pacing back and forth, while Louis is trying to calm him down. When they finally spot me, they come sprinting towards me.
"How did it go?!" Harry asks.
I squeal, "Harry, I did it. They loved me! We're going to New York!"
"Oh my god!" Harry screams, teary eyed. He lifts me up, and spins me around. I laugh against his neck, then he puts me down.
"My dream's finally coming true."
Although my biggest dream is coming true, I still have one more to accomplish.
