Marcel knocked on the threshold of the empty room that Axel sat in. Axel looked up and noticed him walking in.

"Something wrong, Marcel," Axel asked.

"I heard about what you did today," Marcel said, "That was really kind of you. Are you able to sense that? Loss and pain from everyone?"

"If I focus I can see their souls," Axel said, "Or spirits in your case."

"Can you see mine," Marcel asked, his voice almost a whisper.

Axel focused, being able to see his spirit. He nodded slowly.

"That must be weird dealing with daily," Marcel said.

"Not really," Axel said, "It helps actually. It's easier to tell when someone needs comfort."

"Can I ask why you chose Klaus," Marcel asked.

"I didn't," Axel said, "He was assigned to me. But as I learn how to distance myself, I can see why he was chosen. Klaus isn't evil... He's broken in ways that would make angels weep. The pain he's endured, I'm surprised he's still alive."

"I have a feeling you're growing on him," Marcel said.

"That's a shame. I enjoyed the fire in him," Axel teased, making Marcel huff out a chuckle.

"Marcel, I need to speak with Axel alone," Klaus said, walking in.

Marcel left the room so they could talk. Axel stood up to face Klaus.

"Something on your mind," Axel asked.

"Are you still upset," Klaus asked, thinning his lips, "Because it seems, you're attending to everyone but me! You've barely shown me any attention today. I had to ask you to join us for the meeting with the witches. And even then you didn't bother speaking to me!"

Axel stared at Klaus in confusion.

"You were upset for me following you around, I thought," Axel said.

"That was before I knew you would ignore me," Klaus snapped, "So if you are upset, say something!"

"I'm not upset, Klaus," Axel said, "I assumed you wanted to be left alone. I never meant to make you feel like I was ignoring you. I apologize."

Klaus stared at the Nephilim, trying to find some reason to stay pissed. He was not expecting an apology. If anything he was expecting him to leave or yell at him.

"Klaus?"

"Why are you like this," Klaus asked.

"Like what?"

"I'm trying to find a reason to hate you," Klaus scolded, "Yet, you keep being kind to me, forgiving my horrid attitude, and apologizing."

"I'm confused. What do you want me to do," Axel said.

"Get angry with me, scold me, something," Klaus shouted, "Stop excusing my behavior!"

"You've done nothing to make me get angry lately," Axel said.

"Axel, for the love of... Talk to me! Even if that means following me around the house again," Klaus said.

"Okay."

Klaus stayed still for a moment, staring at him. Then he left the room.

After a minute, Axel found Klaus sitting at the table. He had a drink in front of him and a stern look on his face.

"Is this seat taken," Axel said.

"Does it look taken," Klaus sassed.

"No. But then again, neither do you."

Axel sat down next to him as Klaus smirked.

"Do you want to hate me," Axel asked.

"Yes," Klaus said.

"Why don't you," Axel asked.

"Because you're kind, caring, and sweet to others," Klaus explained, "And when I try to argue with you, you're so gentle that I can never stay mad. It pisses me off."

"Why would you want to argue," Axel smirked, "Why not have a regular conversation? One that doesn't consist of us going at each other's throat."

"I don't do regular conversation very well," Klaus said.

"You're doing a pretty job right now," Axel smiled, making Klaus look at him, "It doesn't have to be small talk, you know."

"Fine," Klaus said, pouring an extra drink for Axel, "Who is Axel Morningstar?"

"That depends. Is he speaking with a friend, foe, or family," Axel asked, taking the glass.

"Friend," Klaus said.

"How close," Axel asked.

"Does it matter," Klaus asked.

"You're not the only one with trust issues, Klaus," Axel smirked.

"Closest friend," Klaus shrugged.

Axel took a deep breath, imagining how he acts around Dean and Sam. He took a long sip of his drink.

"With his closest friend, Axel is a goofball. He's quick-witted, mischievous, and a bit of a troublemaker," Axel said, speaking in third person, "He's also protective and caring to his friend. He knows how to be flexible so he can help wherever he's needed. What about Klaus Mikaelson?"

"I'm asking the questions here," Klaus said, making him chuckle, "To family?"

"He's tough but a bit more vulnerable. He knows how to switch between being a fearless soldier and being a loving son. He can be considered overprotective at times. He tries to keep his family safe, even if it hurts him," Axel said.

Klaus went silent for a moment. A look of deep thought rested on his face.

"I know the feeling all too well," Klaus said softly, "You seem like this control freak or bad guy when in reality you're just trying to protect your siblings. But the more you try, the more they seem to hate you for it."

Axel knew he wasn't talking about him anymore. Klaus was speaking about himself. A look of sadness soon replaced his look of deep thought.

Axel slowly reached out to grab his hand. Klaus saw his hand, but didn't move as he reached for it. As soon as their hands made contact, Kol showed up.

"Nik, have you seen my car keys," Kol asked, making Axel pull his hand back quickly.

"Why would I know where your car keys are," Klaus asked, irritation in his voice at the interruption.

"You used them to gouge out someone's eyeballs last week, remember," Kol said.

"Check the courtyard then," Klaus said.

Kol went to check in the courtyard as he suggested.

Klaus turned back to Axel with a gleam of hope to pick up where they left off. Axel kept his eyes lowered as his fingers grazed over the hand that held Klaus's.

"I should get up," Axel said, standing up, "Find a way to make myself useful."

"You can watch me paint again," Klaus offered, trying to sound nonchalant, "If you want, of course. I wouldn't care."

"I would love to," Axel smiled.
