"Digger, can you go out to get the mail?" His mum asks him. They were all sitting down at the kitchen table, waiting for their mum to finish making breakfast. "Yeah, sure" Digger gets up and walks out of the house. He steps onto the grass and stands in front of the mailbox, thinking nothing of what was inside. He looks inside as his eyes widen. "We have a note! I think it's from Dad!" Digger yells in exciment. He runs into the house with the letter.
He hands it to his mum. She peels it open. They all huddle up in front of the table like they always do when they have a note from dad. "Read it, read it, read it!" Dusty chants impatiently. She stares down at it and clears her throat.
Hey kids, Hey Jess. I'm so sorry that I'm late on my visit. I had some trouble getting back home. I promise I'll be there for Christmas. I can't wait to see you. Miss you.
-Love, Dad.
"HE'S COMING FOR CHRISTMAS! HE'S COMING FOR CHRISTMAS!" Dusty screeches happily as she runs around the kitchen. "Oh....I was hoping he'd come sooner than that..." Rusty says with his head down. "It's okay, Rusty, it's only a month and a half" Rusty's mum says nicely calmly.
She sets breakfast in front of them.
Rusty doesn't eat. He stabs his eggs with a fork a couple of times before pushing the plate away from him, not saying anything. "Why are you so upset about dad?" Digger asks, his mouth still full of food. "I just miss him so much.....I just don't wanna wait...." Rusty says quietly. "Well, Rusty... Sometimes, all you can do in life is wait..." Rusty's Mum says softly, washing the dirty dishes. "Okay, mum...." Rusty said with a small smile.
