Steve was up before the sun, as usual. He quietly climbed out of bed and got everything he needed into the bathroom. He was hoping the door was thick enough that he wouldn't wake Maddison by waking Avery up. He wanted to do their morning run as he had every morning since before Christmas. He hadn't skipped a day since Valentines Day, and that was only because Avery's mom had her overnight. He hated how her mother had spoken to her at Avery's party, but it didn't hurt that since then, she hadn't had Avery once. Heck, she hadn't even called Maddison to apologize or ask to see Avery once since that day.
He quietly scooped up his sleeping little girl, carrying her into the bathroom to get her ready for their run. He secretly hoped that when she would get older, she'd want to join in on the running. But if not, he didn't mind carrying his girl on his back like a backpack. "Hey, pumpkin." He whispered, kissing Avery's cheek several times until she sleepily pushed his face away. She rubbed her eyes with her fists until they opened, and she stared up at him. He was in awe of this little girl.
"Hi, pumpkin." He repeated, smiling at her. When she looked like she was about to start crying, he distracted her by blowing a raspberry on her belly. That did the trick. She let out a loud giggle, swatting his face.
Steve got her ready as quietly as possible, but his talkative little girl was awake this morning. Babbling away and demanding all the kisses. When they were dressed, changed, and wearing sunscreen. He quietly carried her out into the room and strapped her into the running stroller. He figured a sunrise run on the boardwalk would be fun.
Steve heard Maddison let out a groan, rolling over in bed. She felt for him, opening her eyes when all she felt was an empty half of the bed. "What are you doing?" She asked, her voice still groggy.
Steve came around to the bed, kissing her sleepy lips. "Taking Avery on our run. Go back to bed, angel. I'll bring breakfast back." He promised her. Stealing another kiss before heading back to Avery.
"Bagels." Maddison grumbled. Steve laughed at how she was already sound asleep after her request.
Steve and Avery ran for over an hour as the sun rose. It was beautiful here, and their view of the water was perfect. He loved it. He hoped that once school was done, he could take his girls somewhere for a little longer. Maybe Venice or somewhere in the Caribbean. He ran until the boardwalk started to get busy, and his girl started to get antsy. Yelling out for him. "I'm here, pumpkin!" He said, rounding the stroller and unbuckeling his girl. She reached out for him, making grabby hands for her daddy. He scooped her up into his arms, letting her tug at his beard like she always does.
Steve walked with Avery in his arm, pushing the stroller as well. He figured he'd carry his girl and put their breakfast in her seat since she wanted him now that she was awake.
"You have such a cute baby!" Someone squealed. Steve spun around to see several women staring at him and Avery.
Steve smiled proudly, looking at his girl before looking at the women. "Thank you." He told them.
"Is she yours?" One of the women asked. Steve smiled, nodding his head. "Yep, this is my daughter." He bragged happily.
The woman smiled at him, standing up and coming towards the two. "She's so cute. Is her mom in the picture?" She asked.
Steve's smile fell. He stared down at this woman who kept approaching. "Yes. My wife is in bed, and we're bringing breakfast back for her. Excuse us." He said shortly, walking away without waiting for a response.
Steve knew he could've handled that better. He'd been hit on since coming into this century. But he never got used to it, and he never liked it. Especially now that he had Maddison. He knew that woman meant no harm and would probably back off if he had told her about Maddison. But it didn't matter.
The bakery was packed when Steve and Avery walked in. So he locked up the stroller where the bikes sat, hoping nobody tried to steal it and headed inside with Avery in his arms. She babbled away, swatting, giggling, squealing, and kissing him as they waited in line. He pretended not to notice several people quietly get out of line and get back in line behind him. He wasn't sure if it was because they recognized him or if Avery was bothering them.
By the time the 3rd person jumped out of line, Steve stopped them. "Is my daughter bothering you?" He asked quietly to the woman as she passed him to join the back of the line.
This woman shook her head no, smiling up at Steve. "Not at all. I'm just not in a rush, so why not let the single dad get on with his day a little sooner.." She said.
Steve gave a small sigh. "My wife is just still in bed. The little misses and I wanted to surprise her with breakfast, so we snuck out." He explained proudly.
The woman smiled even brighter up at Steve. "That's so cute!" She squealed. "Please, go ahead!" She insisted. She headed towards the end of the line as she had planned.
Steve felt weird cutting people just because he had his girl with him. But if it got him back to Maddison sooner, he didn't mind it one bit. Plus, everyone was gushing over how cute his girl looked. He loved it. Avery did, too. He could tell by the way she giggled and squealed every time someone would baby talk her, blow kisses, or just smile her way. He loved how happy his baby was.
Steve expected Maddison to be awake by the time he got back, but he was happy to be wrong. His girl was curled up under the blankets with nothing but a mess of red hair poking out. He figured he'd let her sleep just a little longer. He changed Avery, washing her hands and her face before setting her some breakfast on the tray of the travel highchair they'd brought with them. When Avery was happily picking apart her breakfast, he woke up Maddison while keeping a close eye on Avery to make sure she didn't choke.
Steve kissed Maddison on the cheek several times, then her nose, then her lips. Finally, he got a groan from his girl. She was just as grumpy waking up as Avery was. He loved it. "I brought bagels." He said against her lips, stealing a kiss that she finally reciprocated. "Bagels? How'd you know?" She asked groggily.
Steve let out a bark of laughter, uncovering his girl. He had to fight back his erection that she'd fallen asleep naked. He loved the sight of his girl. "You're killing me here." He said. He lightly pinched her nipple between his fingers, toying with the metal bar through her hard bud.
Maddison groaned, swatting his hand away with a small laugh. "Sleeping." She said.
Steve let out another laugh, leaning down to suck on her nipple until it was even harder under his tongue. "I know, angel. I brought breakfast." He reminded her.
"Okay, okay. I'm up." Maddison said. She finally flung the covers off, revealing her gorgeous naked body to him.
