Maddison spent the rest of her evening with Steve. While she missed their baby girl, she loved these nights where she was able to have her boyfriend to herself, the nights she was able to focus on just them. She worried that sounded selfish, that it made her a bad mom. But she knew that was just her insecurities getting the better of her.
These nights that it was just the two of them were rare. Maybe a few nights a month when someone would take Avery for the night.
Steve had ordered wings and sides for the two of them, knowing it was Maddison's favorite. That and Mexican inspired food. She loved how thoughtful he was to her needs and how he seemed to know her so well. At first, when Steve would have Jackson and Scott pick Avery up for the night, she would get upset. She wanted her baby to make her feel better after a rough day. But then she slowly realized that in order to be the mother that she wanted to be and that Avery deserved, she needed time to herself. She needed time with just her and Steve. She just needed time where Avery wasn't her only priority. She felt guilty about that, but Steve slowly helped her realize that it wasn't selfish to need to take care of yourself. He did everything he could to take care of her, but he helped her realize that in order to be the best mom she could be, she needed nights where she wasn't a mom first. Just like Steve needed nights where he wasn't a dad first. They both needed nights where they were just Maddison and Steve, and that was okay.
Maddison ended up taking a second shower after realizing that in her worked up state, she never actually showered. She just stood under the water as hot as she could stand it until the hot water ran out and chilled her skin. So this time, she used soap. When she came out of the bathroom, Steve was setting out everything that he had ordered at the kitchen table for the two of them, He handed her a plate and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Make your plate, I will grab you a drink." He said sweetly to her before stealing another quick kiss and heading off into the kitchen.
Maddison loaded up her plate with a little of everything. She grabbed some honey BBQ wings, some spicy chipotle wings, and some buffalo wings. She also grabbed a small bunch of the loaded cheesy fries, cheese sticks, and a single onion ring. "Save room for dessert, angel. I got you those chocolate lava cakes you like so much." Steve called out from the kitchen.
Maddison blushed at that, smiling that he was so attentive to her needs. But she hadn't grabbed too much. She knew she'd have space for dessert. She was also hoping she wasn't too full by the time dinner was done that she could have 2nd dessert, Steve. It was Friday night, so she didn't have school, and Avery was with Jackson and Scott. She wanted a passion filled night with her boyfriend. She wanted to wake up covered in bite marks and sore. She needed it.
Steve came back with some kind of frozen drink and a beer in his hand. He sat the blue slushie looking drink in front of Maddison before kissing her on the forehead and taking a seat next to her. "It's some mixed drink I found online using that moscato that you like." He explained while he loaded up his own plate with a little of everything. She smiled at that, loving how thoughtful Steve was to what she liked and what she needed. She would have happily drank the water or the sweet tea that he had brought her without complaint, but she did feel like she needed something a little stronger after a long week.
Maddison and Steve happily ate their wings, sides, and desserts while Steve drank a few beers, and Maddison only had two of her fancy slushie drinks. She knew that she wouldn't be getting Steve into bed if she was tipsy. He was far too good of a guy to have sex with her while she was under the influence. Despite how long they'd been together, he felt like it was taking advantage of her.
Maddison headed into the bedroom to pick a movie for the two to watch in bed while Steve cleaned up dinner. She smiled when she thought about this larger than life man, this literal superhero doing her dishes and being Mr. Mom to their daughter. Here he was, someone who had fought aliens and gods and saved the world countless times. Yet he was basically a stay at home dad to a wildly energetic toddler. He spent his nights when Maddison wasn't at night school rubbing her back and shoulders so she could get a better nights sleep and happily rubbed her feet whenever she had a particularly rough day. He was perfect. He was hers.
