Steve quickly cleaned himself up and threw on a clean pair of boxers before climbing into bed beside Maddison. He pulled her into his chest, humming happily when she settled against him and held herself as close as she could. "I love you, angel." He said against her forehead, giving it a few soft kisses.

Maddison tightened her hold on him at that, pressing her lips to his bare chest. "I love you. Thank you for tonight." She mumbled sleepily.

Steve knew Maddison was having a hard time lately, that school, Avery, work, and this court case have been a lot for her. He knew she'd been more exhausted, more irritable, and more stressed lately. He was doing everything he could to help her, he just wasn't sure what else he could do aside from just being there for her.

Steve held onto Maddison until she fell asleep in his arms, no way was he moving. He'd never want to anyone. No, his home was with his girls. His life was with his girls.

Steve eventually drifted off to sleep, Maddison's pick of a movie playing almost on mute as background noise. He didn't even care enough to turn the TV off. Not when Maddison seemed to have very broken sleep lately. She'd wake up every few hours, restless and anxious. He'd wake up with her every time he heard her and begged her to wake him up every time it happened, but she never did. She never wanted to disturb him.

Steve woke up to the almost commercial sound of the streaming service, advertising their original movies and shows. But he felt alone in bed. He quickly sat up, the only light in the house being the moon shining in the windows, the street lights of Brooklyn, and the TV. He climbed out of bed, intending to find his girl and comfort her.

Steve found Maddison sitting on the couch. She was in the dark with her knees pulled up to her chest and her arms wrapped around herself, staring off into nothing. "Angel, why are you up?" He asked.

Maddison jumped when he spoke, seemingly unaware that he was even in the room. But Steve kept coming. He sat himself down next to her, pulling her into his side and draping her legs across his lap. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, encouraging her to lean into him, which she did.

Maddison adjusted into Steve's side, laying her head on his shoulder. "Can't sleep." She mumbled sleepily.

Steve chuckled at that, adjusting the two so they were lying on the couch rather than sitting. He put Maddison on top of himself, tucking her face into his neck. "Okay. Then we'll just sit here together for a little while." He almost whispered.

Maddison mumbled a quick thank you, but left her face hidden in his neck. "Do you want to talk about it?" Steve asked, kissing the top of her head, but she just lightly shook her head no and nuzzled herself further into his embrace.

Steve didn't need Maddison to talk about it to know what's going on, he knew how scared she was about the case. He knew they'd dropped the custody battle, but she was anxious about having to pay Ben for breaking the no-contact order. Not like it was intentional.

Steve felt like this was all his fault, if he hadn't taken her to Jersey for a vacation, she wouldn't be dealing with any of this. But what was done is done, and both of his girls loved that vacation. He already couldn't wait for the next break so he could take them somewhere new.

Steve rubbed his hands along Maddison's bare back, hoping to lull her back to sleep. He smiled to himself when he was finally successful and she slumped into his embrace fully. He just grabbed a throw blanket off the back of the couch, covering them up as best as he could with the small blanket before falling asleep as well.
