Alice
Having Tristan tell us about Callie planning another attack has the guys wanting to practice using their powers more, so they head out to the backyard. Can't say that I blame them, but I do ask them to keep it low key. I don't want any of the neighbors looking out their windows and having heart attacks.
I sit on one of the patio chairs along with Paige and Finn and we watch as Cole plays around with my dad's flowerbeds, and Eli practice his astral projection. He was still struggling, but could flicker in and out across the yard for a couple of seconds before snapping back.
"You held it for longer that time!" I call out in encouragement. He barley manages a small smile, and I'm not sure if it's because he feels frustrated or because he is still upset with after learning about how close Finn and I were.
"I don't see anything," Paige says. "Just the one Elijah."
"Could be a ghost think?" Finn asks.
Both Paige and I snap our heads in his direction. "Go on," she says, "I think you are on to something."
"I was just thinking, isn't astral projections suppose to be like the soul leaving this plane? Meaning, if Alice can see ghosts, which are just souls, then it makes sense that she's Eli's projection."
"Finn Sawyer you are a genius!" Paige exclaims. "That pretty face of yours always makes me seriously forget how smart you are."
"Umm, thank you," he says unsure if that was a compliment or not.
What Finn says makes perfect sense and honestly I am relieved to have it explained that way. I was thinking back to my conversation with Tristan and this magical bond Eli and are suppose to share. I was wondering if that was why only I could see his projection, but Finn's theory also makes sense. Another thing Tristan had said during our information dump in the living room was Eli and I had a familiar bond. I needed to know more about this connection we had and I needed to know now. So, I pull out my phone and start to google Familiars.
I am only half way through the first page that Wikipedia referenced, when I get a text from Finn.
What are you doing?
Playing angry birds?
Very funny punk.
I'm actually doing some research.
What kind of research.
If you must know I am trying to figure out what a familiar is.
Four thumbs are faster than two.
I shoot him a quick smile before turning back to my search results.
After I finish reading through an article talking mostly about witches and black cats, I move on to the next. It offers much of the same and the only thing I can really take away from it is that a familiar is loyal to their master and does their bidding. Not really what I wanted to find out.
Then Finn texts me a different link that takes me to a page on Necromancers. I remember him asking Tristan what that was so I guess he decided to find out for himself. I read through the page anyway, but it doesn't offer me anything I didn't already know. It was all about how necromancers summon and controlling souls. To be fair the controlling part was something I only managed to do yesterday with a goldfish. But I still knew that I was able to do it. And as for the summoning, I call Tyler all the time.
What does this have to do with familiars?
Tristan said that you are a necromancer.
Yeah but I already know that.
I am assuming lover boy has a soul...
I look up over my phone at Finn and he shrugs at me. This time I put 'necromancers and their familiars' in the search bar. I don't like what I find.
"Hey I'm going to run inside real quick," Eli says kissing me on the cheek."
"Okay," I smile. I quickly lay my phone across my chest so he can't see what I was reading.
"What are you doing?" he asks.
"Oh, nothing. Just playing angry birds," I say and see Finn laugh to himself. I don't want to lie to him, but I also don't want to hurt his feelings by telling him that I am questioning the authenticity of our feelings. Especially when he just stopped being upset with me. So, when Eli goes inside, I continue to read over what I found. Which just confirms my fears.
In summary it seems that a necromancer summons a familiar and basically controls that person's soul. So, basically when a person falls in love and says 'my soul belongs to you,' this time it's literal. Does this make Eli just some kind of puppet and I'm the one pulling the strings? Is that why he can't stay upset with me for more than a few minutes? Because I don't want him to be and therefore he has non choice but to forgive me? The article didn't really go over the details of how it works.
Another question that pops in my head is, did Elijah read this same article? He said that he had done some research on necromancers back home, and that's what gave him the idea for me to control the goldfish. He new that my power was to control souls. Did he also suspect that it could be controlling his?
I turn off my screen as Finn abandons his spot to sit next to me, asking if I am okay.
I show him what I found. "What if none of it's real, Finn?"
"Don't think like that," he says. "I mean the guy obviously cares about you."
"Tomorrow, when we break the spell Tristan had put on us, he says it will only make Eli's feelings stronger."
"Don't see how that's possible," Finn mumbles.
"What if we aren't actually meant to be and all these memories are lies?"
"Maybe you should read this first." He passes his phone to me, and I read the sentence he has highlighted that says...
'The only way a necromancer can call her familiar, is because that person is meant to be his/her soulmate.'
"You don't just send up the bat signal and the first person to show up gets the prize," he tells me. "It literally summons your other half. So, you can rest assured that you and Eli really are meant to be."
He gives me a sad smile then gets up and goes inside and I am left to realize just how selfless Finn Sawyer can be. He may go out of his way to try and mess with Elijah, but he was willing to put his feelings asides to reassure me that my relationship was real and true.
