ADDISON – Now
"I know mom!" I told my mom for the fifth time today.
"Also, when you handshake anyone there, look them straight into the eyes." She gives me another pointer.
"Okay mom, thank you so much, I have to go now, I don't want to be late" I put on my shoes, get my bag and take my keys.
"Okay honey, good luck, remember to read the contract two times and that I am proud of you, love you!"
"Love you too mom" I say with a huge smile on my face before ending the call.
I head to my car and start it up. I take a moment to take all this in.
I started my residency three years ago, I took great jobs, people in the industry started to know my name and I joined many researches and conferences.
I finally built the career I wanted, the only thing left was to open my own center.
That needed more experience with a higher level of teams/players and money.
Today, hopefully, I'll be able to have both.
Last week I got a call from one of the directors of the USA volleyball men's team, offering me a 3 year contract.
They want me to be the teams' doctor and work with a specific team member on some of his 'weaknesses' and 'troubles' (their words).
They also told me they'd give me free accommodation when traveling, which is always, and the salary of this job...let's just say I'll be able to move out from my crappy apartment, open my own center and retire early if I wanted to. I couldn't believe that they were offering all that to me.
Hey, I know I am great at my job, but there are many others more experienced than me. I feel like this is a complete joke, but I don't want to put myself down just yet.
When I said that to mom and Scar, they said to go and focus on the positives. So that's exactly what I am doing. I just need a minute because I feel like the other shoe is going to drop.
I start driving and focus on the positives.
********
I found the coach's office right on time. I am greeted with two 40-something men in suits.
When they look up at me from their seats, one of them- the coach- gives me a look that could kill, but covers it up by giving me what should be a kind smile, but it just makes me uncomfortable and nervous. This is weird.
"You must be Doctor Carter, hello, I am coach Jonas Dean, just call me Dean, dollface." He winks while saying that last part, and he takes my hand in a tight grip and shakes it. Dollface?
I already don't like whatever is really behind that fake smile he is flaunting at me.
I force a small smile on my face and give him and great shake, "yes, hello Coach Dean,"
Calling him Coach Dean made him stop smiling, finally.
He took a step back and returned to looking at me as if I were his biggest enemy.
"Hello, I am Eddie Doug. Diaz's manager."
I also shake his hand and give him a small smile. Who's Diaz?
"We should brief you on the details of your contract with us before signing." Eddie says.
"Well, I have worked with teams before, not just individual athletes. I know I have to be at every game, training and do check-ups. Also-"
