Chapter Three
Anxiety was practically pumping through Matty's blood vessels themselves. She couldn't even think straight so she just nodded her head and walked over cautiously. She still had the letter in hand, it was beginning to crumple in her hand though. Why did her parents seem so... calm? Had the professor not said anything about what kind of school this was yet?
Either way, this couldn't be real, right? Magic didn't exist—or at least not anymore, that's what Matty believed. She believed her ancestors who were Celtic druids possessed magical abilities but that died out a long time ago, not to mention a lot of them were just made-up fairytales. Even though Matty believed magic existed at one point in time, there was no way it existed now and there was no way she was the one who had it. This had to be some sort of joke.
Matty sat down beside her mom, facing the professor. "Matty darling, this is Professor Eleazar Fig," Ada said with a smile, placing a hand on her daughter's shoulder. Her mom seemed perfectly calm and so was her dad. What was going on?
Matty looked over to the professor, who held out his hand. "It's not conventional that a professor shows up to a student's home to discuss school. But you are a unique and special case." Professor Fig said with a small chuckle. Matty hesitantly took his hand and shook it. She was still confused. Did her parents know?
Professor Fig noticed the letter that was still in her other hand. "Ah, I see you have the letter. I was going to ask your parents if you had gotten that yet." He spoke. Matty looked down at the letter in her hand. She couldn't contain herself anymore.
"Do you know?" She suddenly asked her parents, blurting out the words like it was nothing. Her parents looked in between each other before looking at Matty again. "Well... we didn't until a few moments ago but yes, we do know. Professor Fig has already explained that part." Howard answered his daughter, seemingly unbothered by the contents that Professor Fig had explained to him and his wife.
Matty furrowed her brows. "And you're not mad? Scared? Thinking this is some kind of a joke?" She questioned. She seemed more confused than anyone else in the room.
Then Professor Fig spoke up, sensing Matty's confusion. "That's because this isn't a joke." He spoke clearly. "You are in a unique situation, I will say. Usually, students attend school when they turn eleven, but we have only gotten word that you are eligible to attend school this year after you turned fifteen. This is a very real school and the magic you possess is very real too. What you are holding in your hand is a Hogwarts acceptance letter."
Matty was still looking at her parents, how were they not in utter confusion or at least a little scared?
Ada took a deep breath, putting her hands on both of Matty's shoulders. "Look, Matty. Yes, this is a bit of a surprise, but you are still our daughter, and you never will be less of our daughter just because of this." She said, not wanting Matty to worry about her parents being upset over something she couldn't control. "We never would've guessed our daughter was a witch, but you are still our daughter, and we want to support you through anything."
Howard nodded in agreement. Yes, it was just about as unexpected as anything else, but Matty was still their daughter, and nothing could change that.
"So, this is real, all of this is real?" Matty asked, looking over at Professor Fig, he nodded his head, and he had a small smile on his face. "Why... how did we not know any earlier?" She asked the professor.
Luckily for Matty, Professor Fig had prepared to be asked this question. "Well in Wizarding society, we have "blood labels" so to speak. Purebloods, Half-bloods, and Muggleborns. You, Matty, fall under the category of Muggleborn. And er—a Muggle is someone who does not possess magic like a witch or wizard. Since your parents are muggles but you are a witch, you are classified as a Muggleborn." He explained, which made more sense to Matty. She was glad to have such a clear answer but in the back of her mind, this still all just felt like some weird fever dream.
