Chapter Thirty-Four
The moment Matty returned, she sent word to Professor Fig that she needed to meet him in the Map Chamber as soon as possible. Ranrok knew the location of the Repository and she didn't. Although the mine collapsing and her destroying the drill was able to buy her some time, she didn't know how quickly Ranrok would be able to pick up from the damage.
When she arrived in the Map Chamber, she found Professor Fig waiting there for her.
"Professor! You received my owl. Ranrok has the last of Bragbor's journals. He killed Lodgok to get it. He knows where the last Repository is." Matty blurted out the moment she came running down to Professor Fig.
"Godrics's heart!" Professor Fig exclaimed.
"Lodgok—Lodgok and Ranrok were brothers. He was bringing the journal to me." Matty continued. "But I think I bought us some time. I destroyed one of the drills they needed and brought half of the mine down on itself. Ranrok and Rookwood were fighting the last I saw them. The damage there will buy us some time."
The Keepers were listening intently to the conversation being held by Matty and Professor Fig. "Ranrok is a monster. We need to know where the final repository is." Professor Fig said.
Matty turned to the Keepers. "Surely this changes things. Ranrok has Bragbor's journals and knows where the repository is."
Bakar looked confused. "We Obliviated Bragbor. He kept journals? Why would he have documented all of this? He didn't know what we were containing." He said, almost as if he didn't believe what Matty was saying.
"Isidora was telling him everything about the magic when she was asking him to build the container for it. I've seen her memories." Matty replied in a rushed tone. "But enough of this, I need to know where the next trial is."
Bakar fell silent after this and Matty's heart sank. Was he really still not going to give her the location? "Professor Bakar we don't have any time! Ranrok knows where the final repository is! What if he gets to it and you're still stalling me?"
Professor Bakar shook his head. "I am not stalling you. I'm simply waiting for the right time to tell you." He corrected (even though he wasn't even correct). "You mentioned you had bought some time by destroying one of the drills Ranrok was going to use. Use this time you've bought to prepare yourself for what you will face."
What was this absolute idiot saying? Ranrok had the journals! He knew where the repository was and yet the Keepers were still holding out on Matty?
"With all due respect, Professor Bakar, this is a bad idea. I'm ready to take on whatever trial! I'm ready to take on Ranrok." Matty insisted in a desperate tone. But Professor Bakar was unwavering and it just made Matty's blood boil. "This—this is ridiculous." She said, her patience starting to slip.
"You're reaction is telling me that you are not yet ready." He replied. "I promise I will reveal the final trial to you before Ranrok reaches the Repository."
Matty wanted to reply back spitefully but she held her tongue. "Fine, but it better be soon." She seethed angrily before turning around and leaving the Map Chamber.
She wasn't ready? She wasn't ready? How?
Ranrok was getting closer and closer every day and now he had the location. She was almost regretting buying them some time by destroying the drills because now Professor Bakar just had another 'reason' not to tell her where the final trial was.
Professor Fig watched her go, glancing over at the Keepers with a disappointed look on his face before leaving the chamber himself. He felt his heart grow heavy at the fact that Matty—a fifteen-year-old girl who was still learning about the very world she was in, was being burdened with the fate of it.
