Chapter Forty-Seven
The school was full of life the next day; there hadn't been a single day Matty had seen like this as students were celebrating their houses like no other. The House Cup was going to be held that evening and every student from each house was doing something to represent their house.
Matty wasn't sure if she had ever seen anything quite like it but Nellie reassured them that it was normal and was much worse at Quidditch games.
Of course, most of the Slytherin and Gryffindor students were going at it all day, arguing over who was going to win or why one was better than the other. Matty just rolled her eyes at the ridiculousness of some of the arguments. She held a friendly competitive spirit with her Slytherin friends and definitely never took it too far.
But the House Cup was considered one of the most important days of school, not to mention it was the last day of school and students were celebrating no longer having to go to class, carrying large amounts of books around the castle, and much more.
And ironically, although it was one of the most important nights of the school year, Matty somehow ended up barely making it into the Great Hall on time.
She had been too busy wandering around outside until she realized what time it was and rushed inside as fast as she could.
Upon entering the Great Hall, Headmaster Black was already at the podium and everyone was seated so Matty just stood where she was to listen.
The Headmaster cleared his throat before beginning to speak. "This year we have seen our students exemplify the Bravery of Godric Gryffindor, the loyalty of Helga Hufflepuff, the wisdom of Rowena Ravenclaw, and the ambition of Salazar Slytherin!"
As each house was called, their tables erupted in cheers, almost overpowering the headmaster's voice. He gave an annoyed look at the students before trying to speak again.
"And so, the winner of this year's house cup is—,"
Professor Weasley came up and stopped the Headmaster, having something she wanted to say. "Excuse me, Headmaster." She said before turning to the crowd of students.
"If I may: one particular student's heroism during the attack on Hogwarts, not to mention the level to which they have excelled in their coursework, as a new student, no less." Professor Weasley started.
A few heads turned down to where Matty was standing and suddenly she felt extremely awkward, giving an awkward wave as everyone stared.
"Well, it would seem that it certainly merits, I'd say, 100 points to Gryffindor—wouldn't you agree?" Professor Weasley said.
One hundred points? Well, Matty certainly wasn't expecting that!
"Ah, yes. Thank you, Professor Weasley." The Headmaster said. "I suppose we have our winner!"
Suddenly, all the banners hanging from the ceiling turned to the Gryffindor's signature Red and Yellow alongside its symbol. The Gryffindor table erupted in cheers as Matty's friends stumbled out of their chairs and ran over to her.
They all started to cheer loudly as the rest of the Gryffindor table and the other house tables clapped. There were some sour faces of Slytherins but for the most part, they were cheering Gryffindor on too.
Matty cheered alongside her friends since, of course, they had helped Gryffindor win too. Her expectations of Gryffindor winning were more of just a house solidarity thing but now they had truly won!
After most of the cheers died down and it was mostly just students chatting with each other and Gryffindors whispering about how they were going to celebrate in the Common Room later that night, Sebastian came walking up to Matty.
"Well, well, well, I suppose you were right." He said with a small chuckle.
"I told you. And I'm always right, aren't I?" Matty asked in a bit of a sarcastic tone.
Sebastian rolled his eyes. "Yes, you are always right. Remind me of that the next time I'm going to do something stupid, would you?"
Some of the students started to file out of the Great Hall. The Gryffindors were excitedly leaving to go up to their Common Room to celebrate. From what Matty had heard, it was going to be quite the celebration.
"Beginners luck, Ambrose." A Slytherin student of the name Thomas Beckam—who was one of Sebastian's roommates—said to her. Of course, he was just saying it to her in good fun as he was one of the Slytherins cheering Gryffindor on when it was announced they won.
"Better luck next year then." Matty quipped back at him.
Sebastian turned to Matty. "So what are you Gryffindors doing to celebrate, hm? Surely something crazy knowing who's in that house and all."
Before Matty could even answer, Nellie was grabbing her hand and answering the question for her. "We're partying all night long." She said. "And that means she has to be there because she just got us one hundred points. See you tomorrow, Sebastian!"
Nellie dragged Matty off by her hand and Matty waved goodbye quickly to Sebastian, clearly not expecting to be dragged off by her friend like that.
***
The Gryffindor Common room was wild that night and Matty had never seen anything like that. If teenagers were anything like this in the muggle world, they were doomed. But she couldn't say that she wasn't enjoying herself.
Of course, there was the matter of Garreth spiking the drinks with whatever destructive concoctions he had made yet again and so she made sure to avoid that for now.
There were a few other students from different houses scattered around the Common Room as well. Hope had decided to tag along, mostly at the request of Matty and Garreth that she be there to celebrate.
The room was full of chatter before Lewis Wright, the Gryffindor Headboy stood up on one of the tables and everyone went quiet. "As Gryffindor Headboy, I just want to say how proud I am of everyone here for helping us win the House Cup..." He started. "And breaking Slytherin's three-year win streak!"
The room started to bust out into cheers again and Leander and Garreth got on their feet to start clapping and cheering. Matty laughed and rolled her eyes. Seemed as if to these Gryffindors, beating Slytherin was more important than winning the House Cup all together.
"You two seem rather ecstatic about beating Slytherin, hm?" She said to them as they sat down again.
"Of course we are, that's how Gryffindor's are supposed to be." Garreth replied. Although, he did have a hint of sarcasm in his tone.
Leander took a seat again. "Suppose you wouldn't understand, Matty. Since you're always running off associating yourself with the enemy."
Matty rolled her eyes. "You two are so immature." She laughed. "How often does Gryffindor even win these things? I mean I'm all for winning but I'm just curious."
Nellie sighed. "Slytherin has won every year for the past three years and Gryffindor won in our first year." She replied.
"And according to Aaron, Ravenclaw won the year before that but don't think for a moment he was helping to add any points. I'm sure he was losing well over half of them." Hope said, rolling her eyes. "He's smart but decides to never use his brain. I'm still unsure of how he's in Ravenclaw to this very day."
Matty began to laugh again. Aaron was quite the troublemaker in the sense that he had some pretty ridiculous ideas and acted on them without thinking about them, ending him up in some serious trouble. But honestly, who didn't have thoughts like those every once in a while?
The rest of the night was spent having fun with friends, as a final hurrah to the Gryffindor house before everyone returned home for the summer.
A last final before life got very boring again.
