Briar Renata... one of my favourites. Don't tell Leo I said that.
The Searcher was never so thankful for all the scattered things in his workplace. The sample had blended in so well Erica did not suspect it was out of place. But then again, she'd only been around here a couple of times, if it was Mark, or maybe Edward, they would've immediately pointed out the weird, shifting purple matter under the microscope.
He'd been in the middle of a conversation with the girl when he saw it, lying in open sight. He stuttered when she asked him a question. He decided to brush it off and pretend it wasn't something different. He had to remind himself last minute of what Deagol said, not wanting his niece to know about it yet.
Erica left soon after and Briar finally got to facepalm himself. For someone who'd lived for so long, seen so much- even more in the past 2 decades- he sure could do a lot of dumb stuff.
He really could imagine Fallon jumping out of nowhere with her troops to kill him for poor work at "maintaining high-level operations secrecy". Twenty years, and no one suspected a thing. No one saw his hands sometimes melting to goo or the electric chip on his right collar bone. He was just the 19-year-old-looking technician of B-12.
After his first few weeks, he was certain someone will find out in months, at most. He was terrible at acting like, you know, a normal person. He'd lived all his life being a giant ball of purple matter with a single eye, wandering the monster dimension. Just one more beast in a sea of them. But, unlike most others, he had a mind. No, not just a brain, a mind. He was not animalistic. He could control himself.
The Centre saw that, and simply put him in a smaller... more practical vessel. He used to look in the mirror and see an amethyst figure with large, blood red eyes that were his. It had haunted him for a while, scared him a lot. Did he get used to himself. No, he didn't. He just learned to hide it real well.
After all, he wasn't the only one who went through the Centre's Sentimental Beast Experiment.
