*Steven's POV*

I ran as fast as I could to where Emmie was laying and, Lauren was crying while calling 911. Tears poured out of my eyes as I dropped down and put Emmie's head in my lap. Her breaths were quick and labored and it didn't seem like she could move much. "Emmie baby girl, this is all my fault, I'm so sorry."

She shakily reached out to me and I took her hand in mine. "D-daddy....i-it....hur-rts," she chocked out.

"I know baby, I know. Just relax and.....and look at the clouds and try to....make something out of them," I said, trying to keep her mind off of the pain. "You're gonna be fine Em, I promise." I started to panic when the life in her eyes started to fade.

The sound of sirens were heard as they pulled in and paramedics jumped out, running over to Emmie and I. "I'm going to need you to back up, sir," one of them said and I stood up.

"Daddy...no!" Emmie cried out and reached out for me again, wanting me to come back.

Lauren grabbed onto my arm and pulled me back as the paramedics put Emmie on a gurney. Lauren reached up and wiped the tears from my face and kissed my shoulder, trying to calm me down. One of the policeman motioned for me to come over.

"I'll take my car to the hospital and you go with Emmie in the ambulance," Lauren said and quickly kissed my lips.

I rushed over to the policeman. "You're that girls father, correct?" He asked and I nodded. "You need to go in the ambulance with her." The man pointed to the ambulance.

"Thank you," I said and went to the ambulance, jumping in the back and sitting next to Emmie who was on the gurney.

"I want my dad," she whispered softly to the paramedic.

"I'm right here, baby," I said and took her hand.

One of the paramedics put a mask on her. "It'll help her breathe better," they told me and quickly got out a clipboard.

It was a long ride to the hospital and I was scared the whole way that Emmie wouldn't make it, but she did. As soon as we got inside, I was told to stay back by one of the paramedics. "We need to do an x-ray and an examination and then you can see her."

I nodded and sat down on one of the couches in the hallway. A few minutes later, Lauren walked through the doors with a tear streaked face, just like me. "What's happening?" She asked and wrapped her arms around me, myself doing the same.

"They're doing an x-ray and an examination, but they said that I couldn't be in there with her," I said and wiped my eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Steve," she whispered into my neck before placing a kiss there. Lauren laced her fingers together with mine and pulled me down on the couch with her.

"I'm such an idiot. If I hadn't of said those things about her, she never would've run out into the street."

Lauren turned to face me, taking my face in her hands. Her thumbs gently rubbed my cheeks. "This is nobody's fault, okay?" Her soft lips pressed against mine, making me feel better, just like she always does.

"Mr. Yeun?" A doctor asked and I pulled away from Lauren.

"Yes?"

"Your daughter is in a room now," he said and looked at a sheet of paper on his clipboard. "It turns out that the impact of the car hit her ribcage, causing a broken rib. One of the fragments chipped off and punctured her lung, making it collapse. We plan on doing lung surgery very soon."

I couldn't take it all in at once, so Lauren spoke for me. "Will she be okay?"

"It depends on how the surgery goes. She's awake now if you want to go see her before," the doctor said and was called over to the front desk.

Lauren held my hand as we went to Emmie's room. She didn't see us at first until I knelt down next to he bed. "Emmie, I'm here now." Her head turned to look at me and a small smile spread across her face.

"Daddy," she said happily but weakly at the same time. "What's gonna happen to me? It's really hard to breathe."

I frowned and stroked her hair. "The doctors said that they will have to do surgery on your lung, but I know that you'll be fine."

A look of fear washed her over her face. "Will....will it hurt?"

"No, they'll put you to sleep, honey. After they're finished you'll probably be sore though," I said when all of a sudden the doctor came back in.

"It's time," he said.

The surgery had gone well and Emmie was asleep late that night in the hospital. Lauren and I were both practically asleep on the couch inside the hospital room, but the two of us were both fighting it. She had her head on my chest and my arms were wrapped around her.

"Lauren, go to sleep," I whispered with a yawn. She placed a kiss on my chest and lightly hummed. "See? You're tired."

"So are you." Her hand played with the hem of my shirt and her finger gently ran along the waistband of my pants before going up my shirt to softly tap my chest. "I'll go to sleep if you go to sleep. If something happens, the doctors will know and come in."

"Deal."
