K E E Y A

I stumbled from my sleep with my heart slapping against my chest as it chased after my breath, while sweat embraced my heated body. The horrors of my nightmare that had pushed me awake were now nowhere to be found as if they never happened, a deadly gaslight to all the feelings that still lingered in me.

I took a deep breath, pulling back the sheets that stuck to my damp body, and the cool air in my room immediately met my skin, filling it with goosebumps. Exhaustion continued to sit in me, pulling a yawn that I could not answer her to, at least not right now. Not when the thought of closing my eyes felt so heavy, so I stood to my feet with a pull of my durag off my head in the process.

It was times like this that I missed owning my own body shop that I could just run off to on nights like this. Instead, I was left walking to my bathroom with a flick of the light on, feeling as if I was going to pass out from exhaustion. I quickly washed my face before moving to grab a blunt and my lighter from my nightstand, deciding to smoke myself back to sleep since I needed it.

So with a grab of my phone, I walked out of my room, through the living room and onto the balcony where I sat down on the small plastic chair on the outside, quickly lighting up. With a generous pull, I was left begging for calm as my other hand worked on turning on my phone as I prepared myself for the mindless scroll to pass time.

My father's name shining across the screen, had me pausing the lift of the blunt back to my lips as I answered the call, placing the phone to my ear.

"Hey dad,"

"You just coming in?"

"Sumn like that," I grumbled as I took another puff of my blunt while sending a glance inside.

I guess Dantae sleeping all the way through this time.

"Can't sleep?"

"I'm good, dad," I told him, knowing the man was prone to worry, and I truly was, I was sleeping a lot better these days.

"You sure?"

"I'm sure, I've been sleeping a lot better up here," I told him, hearing the sound of a car starting, which let me know that he was on his way to work.

"Good," He replied. "How are Dantae and Jerome doing up there with everything?"

"They good, working you know,"

"Yeah," He accepted. "You know Carl's daughter Noami gon be moving up there soon,"

"Yeah?"

"Mhm, the south changing," He voiced, sounding disappointed with the reality.

"Things still bad down there?"

"Mhm, Tyrone in it with Prince now,"

"Damn," I mumbled, taking a puff while imagining just how much worse shit got.

"Yeah, but Noami gon need sum help settling in when she gets up there, Carl is worried about her," He continued on his previous statement. "Could you offer a hand when she gets there?"

"Yeah, I got it,"

"Alright, I'm going to send you her number,"

"Okay,"
