December 3rd 2022.Sitting front row at a funeral really changes the perspective you have about life. One minute you're here, enjoying life and it's beautiful moments, enjoying friends and family; then the next minute you're gone.
I held onto my sleeping two year old as tears cascaded down my cheeks, I looked down at him my heart aching more because he looked just like his father.
I couldn't believe this was happening, I felt like I had been living in a nightmare ever since I got the phone call that Isiah was gone.
I wish I would have seen the signs of his mental illness sooner, maybe he'd still be here with Mason and I. But he was known for keeping things bottled up, so even if I saw those signs I'm sure this would've been the outcome.
The congregation stood as Isaiah's casket was being wheeled out so that we could go to the cemetery.
Mason was waking up, tired grunts escaped his tiny lips as I put on his jacket making sure to zip it all the way up. Scooping him into my arms I grabbed his bag and followed behind Isaiah's mother, father, and younger brother Raheem. I didn't have the best relationship with his family, they a fought me tooth and nail saying Mason wasn't Isaiah's son, which I later proved that he was and they still wanted nothing to do with him; but I was gonna show up here anyway; even if I was alone.
"You ridin' with us Tae?" Isaiah's best friend Duke questioned as I shook my head. His girlfriend Kennedy gave me a hug before walking away from us. It wasn't that I didn't think Duke and Kennedy were cool, I just wanted to be alone and didn't feel like hearing them talk about Isiah the entire drive.
Duke nodded giving me a side hug before looking at Mason who was resting his head on my shoulder, his loose curls tickled my neck as I moved my head slightly. Reaching over he tussled his hair as I smiled a little at Mason's tiny giggle.
"Did he pass his hearing test? I know we talked about that like a week."Duke said as I shook my head. carefully moved down the steps as he followed beside me.
"No, he failed it. I have to take him to the ear doctor tomorrow," I sighed and sniffled as my nose was becoming cold because of the chilly air blowing. "honestly Duke, Im not trying to be rude but this isn't really something I want to discuss right now." I admitted as my voice kind of cracked causing his facial expression softened, Duke was nice, but sometimes he didn't think before he spoke.
"My bad Tae, listen though," He said as I looked at him, my eyes beginning to water as a lump formed in my throat, I tried swallowing it down but it hurt to do so. I knew that as soon as I got into my car the floodgates would open. "if you and lil' man need anything, just let me know. I got y'all."
I nodded and wiped my tears before hearing Mason beginning to whine as he wrapped his little arms around my neck hiding his face from Duke.
I was so tired of the stares and eye-rolls from Isaiah's family throughout this entire thing that I decided to not even go to the cemetery with them. I'd plan to take some flowers to his grave and talk to him on my own accord. I just couldn't deal with them and their fake acts anymore.
