It was a moment of silence so awkward even the most intoxicated man in the world would have felt that urge to leave the room, but needless to say, they continued to talk about the past and the future, but especially the consequences of both. Fang looked over to the plastic sheet soaked in dried blood, trying her best not to be worried for her friend; she grabbed her weapon with a death grip so tight the scales around her until they almost cracked.
Until she felt the little girl crawl back onto her lap and hug her and said her grand papa is a good man he always tried to do the right thing even if it ended up hurting him, like when he saved her when her dad died). She smiled and continued (Dad died like a true Rifleman protecting the weak and fighting for what's right even if it means doing something that hurts him like when he let Mom sign me up to become a hero of The Rifleman )
Fang looked down at the little girl and asked her what she meant; the little girl pulled up her sleeve, revealing surgical scars and syringe markings; Fang grasped the little girl's hand, feeling a motherly instinct to protect and Avenge the child. Mech Girl holds her breath, trying her best not to show discussion on her face; they have heard of The Rifleman using cybernetics and drug enhancements to make their Soldiers better fighters.
But to use children as test subjects is not like them at all, but then again, desperate people do terrible things, and they have been struggling lately against The Bunker's horrors escaping into the swamp and The now many bandits clans now organized under The Bandit King rule. Fang remembers when her Friend got his cybernetics, the horrific process was completely automatically done by a machine with a lobotomized human brain.
It tore apart his flesh while he was still conscious and only gave him paralyzing medicine and cheap painkillers to keep him from going into shock. The process was hell, but she couldn't deny its results. His bones were reinforced with a non-toxic metal alloy; under his skin was a biomechanical bulletproof vest, and not to mention his built-in A.E.D. that would jump-start his heart if it ever stopped.
But it was a catch: the human body was not made to handle such foreign metals and toxins inside of it; the more cybernetics you get, the more potent the toxins, but there was a solution: the younger the person, the less likelihood of rejection.
He was in his early 20s, and his body could adapt, but what about someone younger, let's say early preteens? Not only would they adapt, but they would build a natural resistance due to their bodies still developing, giving you a chance to add more cybernetics implants.
The process was heavily discouraged due to the idea of child soldiers, but it's not the first time it has happened, and it probably won't be the last; after all, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not happening.
