George POV.

“Dad please.” I begged, limping behind him. “Can we please stop? I just feel like I need to rest.”
“No!” My father replied firmly, glaring over his shoulder to look at me. “You’ve wanted us to stop far too many times, so we are not stopping until nightfall.”
“Nightfall? Dad, I don’t think I can walk for that long.” I cried out.

My ankle was still swollen, it even seemed to be getting worse after each passing day. I just wanted to be able to sit down since with every step I felt even more pain running through my leg. The colour had gone from purple to what I assumed was red and it didn’t seem to be getting any better.

“I think it might be infected.” I exclaimed, feeling worried since I remembered that sometimes infected injuries had to be cut off. I didn’t want to lose a leg. I like my legs and I like having the ability to walk without a prosthetic or a wheelchair.

“Just grow up,” he scorned, continuing onwards. “I will cut your leg off if you keep complaining about it.” The harsh words made me whimper but I stopped. I kept my head down, focusing on my feet as I hobbled along in misery.

Part of me wondered about Dream, since it was one of the only ways I could pass the time. I hoped that he hadn’t given up on looking for me, that somehow he used his super demon abilities to follow after us. Please say that he hadn’t given up. I miss him and want to be able to go home.

We were walking within sight of the river, and although it filled me with more stress and anxiety than I could say, I forced myself to bottle all of my fears down. Just continuing to focus on my deep, evenly paced breathing. “Come on.” I muttered to myself. “Just keep going and Dream will eventually find me.”

My stomach rumbled. I was absolutely hungry after not eating much in the past week. My father refused to let me go looking for food alone, or for me to just be alone since he thought I might run off, and it is very difficult for two people to hunt any animals capable of providing us with enough sustenance, especially if one of the two people had an injured leg.

Even if we did catch something, it took ages to cook since my father would only allow us to have a small fire (which I had to make since I’d been living in the forest for ten years and knew how to make a fire and he didn’t). He believed that Dream or some other demon would hunt us down if there was too much smoke.

“Why are you crying?” My father asked. He had glanced over his shoulder and saw the tears running down my face. I stopped walking, and sighed. I gave an explanation which wasn’t entirely coherent nor did it make a lot of sense. All that I knew was that I was exhausted and slumped onto the ground.

Honestly I felt like just passing out then and there, even though I knew that my father would probably drag me along, or yell at me, or even beat me for not moving. Instead he just sighed. “You are so damn pathetic. How are we ever going to get to that human society if you keep bitching and wanting to stop every five minutes.”

“I don’t think there is a human society, Dad.” I told him. “I mean there probably is, but what are the chances that there is a human society here. I’ve been around these woods for years and I’ve never seen them, plus hundreds of demons are around here.” I was trying to convince him, just like I always did, and he ignored me just like he always did.

“Please Dad.” I muttered, tears pricking at my eyes. “I need a rest. I’m exhausted and there is no way that we’ll be able to find that human society.” He seemed agitated by my words but didn’t say anything.

With a sigh at the fact that I was still getting nowhere I slumped forward, promptly falling unconcious on the rough terrain. My father seemed worried out of the corner of my eye and he approached me. My last thoughts were prayers that he wouldn’t end up hurting me for this.

✨??? Later

My eyes fluttered open and I looked up, with my eyes widening when I realised that instead of looking upwards towards the forest sky that I had gotten used to, I was instead looking up at a ceiling. It was a shabby ceiling, rough and dark, as though it was some sort of cave. In fact this was a cave, it definitely was.

This confused me, I mean who wouldn’t it confuse? I had passed out in the middle of the forest in who-knows-where. All that I did know was that it was far away from any cave systems, so realistically I shouldn’t be in a cave. Obviously though I was in the cave, and after pinching myself I became aware of the fact that I was not dreaming.

When I sat up I noticed that along with now being inside, I was also on a bed. It was a mattress which was tattered and dusty with age but still comfortable after sleeping on the cold hard ground for a week. I wondered what must have happened in the time that I was asleep for this to happen.

A person rounded the corner in the cave and I immediately froze. At first when I spotted the pink hair I had feared that it was Techno, and that he had thrown me into a cave to eat me. However the pink hair was the only thing that this person had in common with Techno.

This was a woman with pale blue eyes and probably my height. Her eyes didn’t glow, showing that she was not a demon and instead was a human. “You’re awake.” She said, her eyes widening slightly in surprise. “I’m surprised, you were in a pretty rough condition when we found you.”

“What?” Is all that I asked, my British accent pushing itself to the surface as I spoke.
“We found you and your father. You were unconcious and we took you both in. Our medic had to spend quite a while looking after you, your leg was in pretty bad shape for a sprain. What even happened?” At the mention of my leg I realised that I had a blanket draped over me.

I ripped the blanket off and saw my swollen ankle neatly bandaged, and propped up slightly higher than the rest of my body. “My father tried to walk me to death.” She chuckled, seeming to think that I was telling a joke, when in reality that pretty much was the case.

“Well I’ll go get you some food and water and then I’ll help you up.” She said before turning and leaving. Just before she was out of sight she seemed to remember something and spun back around. “By the way, my name is Niki!”
