Waking up, you're confused when your face aches in pain. "Mama?" You call out, growing scared when you're unable to even open your eyes. Reaching up, you delicately trace your small fingers over the fabric covering your eyes, finding it to be the reason your eyes are forced to remain closed.
Sitting up, you feel around you, finding yourself to no longer be on your futon and instead on the bare tatami mats. "Mama?" You call out once again only to be met with silence. Your heart begins to beat faster in fear as you start to panic. For years you've shared a room with your mother and she always answers when you call out to her.
Feeling desperate to find her, you shakily stand up, hands stretched out in front of you to keep you from running into the wall. With small tentative steps, you shuffle across the floor in search of the door. Perhaps you slept in and she left to make breakfast. That'd explain why she isn't answering you.
It takes quite some time for you to make your way to the wall, following it until you find the door. Sliding it open, you move to go through it only to instantly trip over yourself. A yelp leaves your lips as you collapse to the ground, barely managing to catch yourself with your arms which sends a twinge of pain through them.
Sitting up, you rub at your wrists, frowning at the pain. It's bad enough that your entire face hurts but now your arms do too. You almost want to cry in frustration yet as you sit there you find yourself unable to feel the recognizable feeling of tears in your eyes. This only upsets you further.
Suddenly, a door somewhere to your right slides open, making your head instantly snap in that direction. "Hello? Is that you, Mama?"
"You're awake." A male voice speaks, ignoring your question. You shrink in on yourself, scared of the sudden appearance of a stranger. "You've been unconscious for nearly eighteen hours."
"Where's Mama?" Your voice wavers, body shaking from your overwhelming emotions that you can no longer properly portray.
"I'll explain soon. For now I must check your injuries to make sure they're alright." You hear him step closer which makes you involuntarily flinch.
Scrambling backwards until you hit the wall you shake your head. "Don't touch me! Mama said not to trust strangers!"
The man remains silent for a moment as if pondering your words. "Please forgive me. My name is Tsugikuni Yoriichi. I'm a... family friend."
Furrowing your brows makes you wince as they twinge in pain so you quickly return to a neutral expression. "Like the ones Mama goes to visit at night?"
"Yes." Yoriichi agrees, assuming you're speaking of the other women who had the misfortune of becoming demons alongside your mother. "Now that you know who I am, may I check your injuries?"
You nod despite still not entirely trusting him. However, you're well aware of the fact that you're incapable of checking them yourself and that your mother is currently not there. So, you hesitantly allow him to approach you, trying your best not to flinch away from his touch even has he warns you beforehand.
Yoriichi carefully removes the wraps from around your eyes so he can do a proper assessment. He will admit that he's a bit nervous to check your eyes as there's a high probability of you being blind. If you're not, then there's a chance you won't even be able to see him. Either option is not ideal.
Scanning over your injuries, he's pleased to see that they seem to be doing well despite not being properly cared for. If he stays on top of keeping them clean and changing your bandages then they should heal nicely. It's unfortunate that they'll scar, though. As a women others will likely believe you to be unsightly because of them. Perhaps he can build your confidence during his time with you. You do seem awfully timid.
Finished looking over the numerous scratches covering your face he moves on to the more important part- your eyes. He whispers a warning before carefully lifting your lids with his thumbs. His expression remains emotionless but on the inside he feels disappointed. They're still foggy, one pupil lighter than the other.
"Yori?" Your soft voice breaks his concentration, him not bothering to correct you in calling him by a nickname. "What's wrong with my eyes?"
"Can you describe what you see?"
Frowning, you hold your hand in front of your right eye before doing the same with your left. "I can't see anything when I cover the right but when I cover the left everything is blurry and just looks like blobs of color."
Yoriichi hums in understanding. It's good that you can still somewhat see through one of your eyes. Hopefully that is a sign that you'll regain your vision eventually.
"I need to rewrap your eyes now." He grabs a different cloth, knowing he should clean the first one before using it again. You sit still as he ties the cloth around your eyes to keep your injuries protected. It also helps you from straining your one partially functioning eye.
"Are you going to tell me where Mama is now?" Your question makes his heart clench in his chest.
He's never really had to explain such things to anyone before, especially someone so young and innocent. What makes it worse is that you seem to have no memory of the previous night. You don't remember your own mother attacking you, damaging your face and eyes. Is it a trauma response, perhaps? Would it make things worse if he tells you the truth?
Making up his mind, he looks at you with an unseen sadness in his gaze. "I'm afraid your mother had to leave for a while. I'll be taking care of you for the time being."
