Twenty-Three

Yushiro leads the three of you to the home he shares with another demon named Tamayo. As you approach, you tilt your head in confusion. During your walk you had kicked off your getas and started carrying them, tired of not being able to sense your surroundings. Because of this, you should be able to sense the house you're going to, but instead your senses feel muffled, like there's something there but not quite.

The boy leads you through what is apparently a fake wall, and as soon as you cross to the other side your sense clear up, revealing a large home. Amazed, you follow the others into the house where you find two people- one sitting and the other resting in bed. "Welcome back." The seated woman greets with a soft voice.

"Oh! Are they alright?" Tanjiro questions, referring to the woman lying in bed. "Sorry to just leave them to you."

"This woman will be alright. But her husband... It's unfortunate but we must confine him in an underground cell."

"Isn't it hard for you to treat peoples wounds?" Tanjiro asks in genuine concern and curiosity only to be met with a fist slamming against his chest.

The boy that had led you all there is the one who hit him, disgust and anger filling his voice. "Are you suggesting the smell of flesh as we treat humans... makes us drool?"

"Enough. Why are you being so violent?" The woman cuts in, scolding the demon boy before returning her attention to your group. "I did not tell you my name. My name is Tamayo. This boy here is Yushiro. Please, try to get along." After her introductions she moves on to answering Tanjiro's question. "It isn't hard. I think it is considerably easier than for normal demons. I have altered my body and removed Kibutsuji's curse."

"Altered your body?"

"I no longer need to feed upon people in order to survive. It is enough just to drink a little human blood." She leads everyone into another room where you all take seats on the ground. "You may think it's disgusting, but we buy blood from people in need of money, telling them it's for blood transfusions. Of course, we never take so much that it harms them. Yushiro needs even less blood than I do. I made him a demon."

Tanjiro jolts in shock. "Huh?! You did?!"

"Yes. They say that Kibutsuji is the only one who can increase the number of demons... and that is basically correct. In more than two hundred years Yushiro is the only one I was able to do this with."

"In over two hundred years, Yushiro is the only one you could do it with?!" Tanjiro blurts out, and his next sentence makes you wince. "How old are you Tamayo?!"

Unsurprisingly his question is met with anger from Yushiro who punches him once again. "Don't ask a woman her age, you lout!"

Tamayo scolds Yushiro for the second time before continuing. "One thing I don't want you to misunderstand... I'm not trying to increase the number of demons. I only treat people who have an incurable illness or injury so they can live a little longer. And I always ask those patients if they want to live longer if doing so means they'll become a demon."

"Tamayo... Once people have become demons... Is there a way to make them human again?"

"A way to turn... demons back into humans?" Tamayo repeats as she thinks about it. "It does exist."

Tanjiro lurches forward in desperation. "Please tell me!" This of course makes Yushiro throw him backwards, the boy nearly crashing into you as you sit next to Nezuko keeping her entertained.

"Yushiro..." Tamayo glares making Yushiro try to defend himself by saying he only threw him, not hit him. She ignores this as she turns her attention back to Tanjiro. "Every injury and illness has a medicine or treatment. However, at present, making a demon human again is impossible. Nonetheless, we want to establish a treatment. To do so, we need to study lots of demon blood. I want to ask two things of you. One: I want to examine your sister's blood. Two: I want you to get a sample from a demon with a high concentration of Kibutsuji's blood."

"Right now, Nezuko is in an extremely rare and special condition." Tamayo continues. "I understand she slept for two years, so her body must have changed during that time. Usually, if a demon cannot ingest human flesh or animal meat for such a long time it will grow violent, without fail. But surprisingly, Nezuko does not have those symptoms. I think this miracle will prove to be the key."

Tanjiro looks towards Nezuko where she's laying in your lap happily kicking her legs in the air as you run your fingers through her hair. As he watches the two of you, Tamayo explains more. "The other task will be difficult. A demon with a high concentration of Kibutsuji's blood means a demon close in strength to Kibutsuji. It won't be easy to steal blood from such a demon. But will you still try?"

"Studying blood from many demons to make a medicine. If that's the only way, then I'll do it." Tanjiro answers with determination. "It will help not just Nezuko, but lots of people, right?"

At this moment you silently promise to yourself to help Tanjiro to the best of your ability to collect blood from strong demons. You want to help not only him but Nezuko as well. You care for both of them dearly and you want them to be happy. You want Nezuko to be able to grow old alongside her brother. You want Tanjiro to be able to watch his little sister grow into a beautiful woman.

You want them to be happy, even if you have to risk yourself for that to happen.
