You tilt your head curiously as you hear explosions in the distance. At first, the loud sounds scare you but the more you listen the more you recognize the distinct sound of fireworks. You only ever saw fireworks once in your life when you were younger but the memory always stuck with you. You can almost picture what they look like.
Feeling genuinely excited for the first time in a while, you rush off towards the loud sounds. It isn't until you're almost there that the excitement dies down as you come to the realization that you won't actually be able to see them. Since they go off in the air, you can't sense them through the ground.
Disappointed, you turn to continue on your journey only to pause when you sense a lone figure far off from everyone else. You're not entirely sure why, but something tells you to approach them. So, you slowly make your way up the hill that they're perched on.
"Are they beautiful?" You question the person once a few feet away from them. They instantly stand up from their crouched position, turning to face you with incredible speed. It's almost as if they were about to run but stopped before they did as they stand completely still.
"What?" The man questions in a whisper, seemingly stunned at your sudden appearance.
"I asked if they're beautiful." You step closer until you're standing next to him, head angled up to look towards the sky. "You know, the fireworks?"
He remains silent, staring at you for a few more seconds before dragging his gaze back towards the colorful explosions in the sky. "Very."
You smile softly as you try to picture what they look like in your mind. The man turns his attention back towards you, taking note of how your smile looks quite sad rather than happy. His eyes trail from your lips down to your feet, noticing how you're not wearing any shoes.
It's obvious that you've been walking for quite a few days from how dirty they are. In all honesty, the rest of you isn't much better off. The only thing that seems remotely clean on you is the purple haori you're wearing.
Due to paranoia, you were too scared to properly strip and cleanse yourself during your travels. Any time you found a stream or any source of water, you'd simply kneel next to it and scoop the water up into your hands before trying to rub the dirt from your skin. The only thing you bothered to properly clean was your haori, not wanting to ruin the one thing you have from your first friend asides from Yoriichi.
Pulling his gaze from your dirtied clothes, he looks back towards your covered eyes. He can make out the tips of a few scars peaking over the bandages on your left eye and it's obvious that they're quite old.
He's quite curious as to how you got them and why you bother covering them if they're already healed. They're likely from a fight or accident of some kind which means you survived something traumatizing. Why would you hide something you should be proud of? They show that you survived. You should be proud and showcase them like a fighter.
If he had any, he would proudly show off all of his scars. Because they show that he was the one that came out on top. That he's the one that won and survived the fight. Scars are trophies that deserve to be flaunted, to show off just how strong and capable you are.
Of course, that's just his mentality on the entire thing. He has no clue what you actually went through or what the scars are from, nor does he know why you hide them beneath bandages. He likely never will, either, seeing as this will probably be his only time meeting you.
"What's your name?" Your soft voice breaks him out of his thoughts, and he realizes that you're looking towards him.
He hesitates slightly before responding, seeing no harm in telling you. "Akaza."
"Akaza." You repeat, glad that you actually remembered to ask this time. "My name is (Y/N)."
He says nothing as he turns away, looking to the sky to watch the last of the fireworks go off. You do the same despite being unable to see them, simply enjoying being there with him. You've been quite lonely the past few months so it's nice to have company even if it's someone you just met.
"Do you like fireworks, Akaza?" You find yourself asking, simply wanting to fill the silence.
"I think so." Is his answer, his voice soft and melancholic, as if remembering something unknown.
"I think I like them too." You turn away at that, beginning to descend down the hill.
Akaza watches you leave, finding his curiosity about you growing. He only interacted with you for a few minutes but you left quite the impression. He was truly startled when you first spoke up, having not sensed you approaching him. He didn't hear a single step or breath, either. It was almost as if you were nothing more than a ghost.
Then there was the fact that you knew he was there despite being blind. He knew for a fact that he himself wasn't making any noise, and his presence was well hidden. Yet you seemed to instantly sense him as if you could see him.
You also seemed immensely sad even as you smiled. Like you were hiding years of heartache behind such a fragile smile that could crack at any moment. It made him curious as to what you experienced during your short human life to make you look so broken.
All of these little things makes him want to know more about you but he knows he'll likely never see you again. The last he'll see of you is you walking down the hill and into the darkness, disappearing as if you were never even there in the first place.
