Thirty-Two

It's embarrassing to admit you got lost almost instantly, failing to follow after Tanjiro and Inosuke. Now you're wandering through the mountain on your own, lost and paranoid. Each rustling sound you hear sends your heart into a panic as it skips beats, stuttering in your chest. Every time you jump, you mentally scold yourself for being so pathetic. This is yet another mission where you feel absolutely useless, unable to do anything to help yourself or the others.

You keep your arms securely wrapped around yourself as you follow a random path, still failing to sense anything other than the trees surrounding you. Despite being unable to sense them, you can clearly hear the strange sounds of small insects scuttling about. The sounds seem extremely loud to you for some reason. Perhaps because you're terrified. You're terrified that you'll die on this mountain alone without your friends knowing. Without getting to say goodbye to them. Without getting to tell Zenitsu that you forgive him for reacting the way he did to your scars. You'll die alone, perhaps even get consumed by whatever vile demon inhabits the mountain, leaving not even a corpse behind for your friends to bury.

You continue walking, softly calling out the names of your companions, praying and hoping that one of them will answer. As you walk, you remain blissfully unaware of the eyes watching you with a scrutinizing gaze. As a spider crawls up your leg, you stumble and fall out of shock, quickly smacking at your leg in attempts to get the small arachnid off of you. This is when the stranger speaks up.

"Pathetic." The sudden voice makes you jolt, stumbling back onto your feet as you try your best to focus on sensing the newcomer. Instead, you remain only able to sense the trees surrounding you. "Such a sad creature, unable to see. Should I help you?"

"Who are you?" You question, straightening up as you try to keep your voice from wavering in attempts to make it seem as if you're not scared.

"My name is Rui." The boy answers. You're able to locate where his voice is coming from, your head tilting back as you face the sky. "Ah, your hearing must be quite good. Tell me, does it anger you not being able to see? Do you feel useless? Sad? Pathetic?"

You grit your teeth, fist clenching around the hilt of your blade. You don't get the chance to unsheathe it as thin webs wrap tightly around your wrists, yanking your arms above you. You cry out in pain as the webs dig into your skin, warm blood beginning to slowly drip down your arms. The demon clicks his tongue as he tightens the webs just a bit more.

"I feel pity for you." Rui moves from his spot on his threads in the air, instead now standing in front of you as he puts his hand against your cheek. You flinch away from the touch, unable to do anything more. "How about becoming a part of my family? Become my new big sister. I bet that with his blood you'll regain your vision, and you'll be stronger than ever. What do you say?"

"I refuse." The words come out with a lone growling tone, forced between your grit teeth.

"How unfortunate." You yelp as you're suddenly pulled into the air, dangling by your bleeding and torn wrists. "I'll return once I kill the rest of the pests crawling around my home. When I do, you'll agree to be my big sister, right?"

Rui doesn't give you the chance to answer as he leaves, going to find his next victim. You remain in the air, unable to move as the webs dig into your wrists. Pain radiates up your arms and across your shoulders, and blood continues to steadily drip from your injuries. Incapable of staying awake, you soon pass out from the combination of pain and blood loss, leaving your limp unconscious body dangling in the air.

A bit farther away Tanjiro is confronted by Rui. He fights desperately, even with a broken weapon to keep his sister safe as she unfortunately faces the same dilemma you do. The fight feels as if it lasts for hours before he's finally trapped, unable to do anything as the red webs quickly close in on him. However, his savior soon makes his presence known as he easily destroys the web. Without wasting any time, he kills the lower moon as well.

The group is then confronted by a girl with a butterfly haori, a gentle smile on her face despite her clearly attempting to kill Nezuko. The two hashira engage in battle while Tanjiro and Nezuko run, being chased by the younger butterfly girl that was at the final selection. Thankfully everyone stops upon hearing a crow squawking lowly about taking in Tanjiro, Nezuko and (Y/N), along with your descriptions. Giyu freezes upon hearing your name, realizing that he hadn't seen you with the two siblings.

"Where is (Y/N)? She's here?" Giyu questions Tanjiro quickly before the boy passes out. Tanjiro is barely able to nod before his eyes close, leaving Giyu slightly panicked. You weren't with Tanjiro and you weren't with the boar, so that means you're probably alone somewhere. Giyu would never admit it but he has wondered about you a few times since sending you off with the siblings. He even heard from his old trainer that you passed final selection and became a demon slayer. Since then he hasn't heard anything else about you, leading him to believing that you perished during a mission.

Surprising Shinobu, Giyu quickly takes off in the opposite direction, leaving her with Tanjiro's unconscious body. He runs as fast as possible, keeping his head on a swivel as he looks everywhere for you. He comes across the bodies of many deceased slayers yet none of them resemble you. It makes him feel a bit better not finding your body among the others, but he knows there's still the chance of finding your body elsewhere. Thankfully, he doesn't have to search much longer as he soon stumbles across a pathway.

He would've continued on if it weren't for the fact that he spots blood steadily dripping, creating a small rippling puddle on the ground. Looking up, he spots you dangling in the trees, Rui's webs still holding you despite his death. Giyu is quick to cut the webs, easily catching you in his arms. He kneels to the ground, releasing your legs so he can check for your pulse. He lets out an almost imperceptible breath of relief once he finds it. He quickly stands back up, taking off towards the entrance to the mountain where he's sure some Kakushi are waiting so you can get treatment.

Giyu is so relieved that he found you alive that he doesn't even have a chance to worry about why you have been summoned alongside the siblings.
