Twenty-One

Entering the town that your first mission resides in, you're met with the murmuring citizens talking about a boy who lost his fiancé. You feel bad for the boy, knowing it isn't easy to lose someone you love, and it's even worse when everyone around you continues to talk about it leaving you unable to heal and move on. You would hope that people would have enough class and care to refrain from speaking about him within his vicinity but it seems they care more for the gossip.

"Kazumi!" Tanjiro calls out as he approaches the boy the others were speaking about, you following shortly behind him. "I would like to speak with you, if I may?"

The boy leads the two of you to a different area of the town. "This is where Satoko disappeared. You may not believe me, but..."

"I believe you!" Tanjiro cuts him off. "I absolutely believe you! Truly!"

Tanjiro suddenly drops to the ground, his face lowered close to the dirt as he takes a few sniffs. If you didn't know Tanjiro as well as you do, you'd think he was being strange. However, you know that he has a nose like no other, and that he's trying to sniff out either the girl or the demon that took her. It takes him no time at all to catch the scent, him standing and taking off in a sprint as Kazumi asks him what happened. Tanjiro calls back that he found the scent of the demon, the smell getting stronger as he runs off.

As Tanjiro leaps up on a rooftop, you remain on the ground with Kazumi so you can run with him to where Tanjiro is going. By the time the two of you catch up with him he has found the demon and apparently a girl that it had recently taken. "Where are the girls you kidnapped?!" Tanjiro demands only to be met with a loud screeching sound. You can't help but to cringe, the sound being especially loud to you.

"Kazumi! Take her and stay by (Y/N)! She can protect you!" Kazumi obeys Tanjiro as he takes the unconscious girl into his arms, moving to stand by your side. Despite you obviously being blind, the boy trusts Tanjiro when he says that you can protect him.

You're shocked when the singular demon presence becomes three, all of them being near Tanjiro before disappearing. Out of nowhere you sense one behind you causing you to react quickly as you swing your blade towards it barely cutting into it. It hisses in anger as it backs away, and you keep your protective stance knowing that there are two others.

The demon begins yelling at you, telling you not to interfere as the girl is fresh at sixteen years old, her freshness diminishing with each passing moment. You sense a second demon appear behind all of you, this one saying to calm down and that there's always tonight.

"You monster... Let Satoko go... You took her two nights ago!" Kazumi's voice shakes as he speaks.

"Satoko? Who is that?" The demon questions before you hear the shuffling of fabric. "If her hairpin is among this collection, I've already eaten her." From Kazumi's silence you know it's likely that he spotted her hairpin amongst the collection. You feel bad for him but there's nothing you can do.

They begin attacking once more, focusing more on Tanjiro as they see him as the biggest threat. You remain beside Kazumi knowing that you need to protect him as he's defenseless while holding the unconscious girl. Tanjiro can protect himself, and if not then he has Nezuko watching his back, said girl making her appearance when the demon gets behind her brother.

The two siblings fight, and as you're busy trying to keep up with tracking them you become slightly distracted. You fail to notice that the ground beneath your feet is rapidly changing before it's too late and you find yourself falling into water. You try your best to remain calm as you're submerged but without solid ground beneath your feet you can't quite sense your surroundings.

You feel things brushing against you, and as you swipe them away with your hand you realize that they're pieces of fabric. You're surrounded by a lot of them it seems and you know that the cloth likely belongs to the demons previous victims. Knowing that the girls went through what you're going through before their deaths breaks your heart. They were probably terrified being submerged in water, surrounded by floating pieces of clothing, unable to do anything as they're attacked.

You can feel the slight movement of water around you as something else joins you in the water. At first you think it's the demon, but when you're gently grabbed around the waist you realize it's Tanjiro. You know he's trying to reassure you with his grip on your waist as he's unable to speak. You appreciate the notion, and you fully trust him to get you both out of the situation.

He pulls you close to him as he keeps track of where the demons are at. They swim quickly around you both, moving faster and faster the longer they're down there. Tanjiro keeps his eyes on them to the best of his ability as he tries to come up with a way to defeat them while keeping you safe. After a moment he gets the idea to use his sixth form, successfully killing the demons.

With the demons dead, Tanjiro puts his arm around you once again as he pulls you up towards the surface where you both emerge slightly out of breath. With you safely deposited with Kazumi, Tanjiro heads to help Nezuko with the third and final demon. He questions the demon only to receive no answers, so he quickly beheads it before coming to check on Kazumi and the unconscious girl.

The two of them have a short conversation as Tanjiro hands over a torn piece of cloth containing a few different hairpins, and from Kazumi's cries you know Satoko's must be amongst them. After that the two of you say goodbye before leaving, heading off to Asakusa as told by your crows.
