As a kid Aelia never completely fit in. She was smart, skipping grades like she was eating candy. Taking care of her siblings, working many jobs anything to get ahead

She only fit in when it got violent and she showed everyone why they shouldn't mess with a Gallagher but even then she didn't fit in completely when she was offered protection from all four gangs

Now though, she feels like she fits in. Enough to have her friends over for a movie night with her siblings "Come on Meredith!" Aelia yelled "The movies about to start"

"I'm here. I'm here" Meredith ran in with the popcorn taking a seat next to Aelia and Alex with the rest of the kids, Cristina and Elena spread out around the living room

"Male, 55, victim of a head collision" the paramedic called out as he took the patient out of the ambulance "GCS is a 3-skull fracture, multiple internal injuries. His veins blew so we've been pushing meds down the tube. PEA on arrival"

"How long has he been down?" Bailey inquired

"We've been doing CRP for about 20 minutes, it took 20 minutes to get him out of the car. He's pretty much gone"

"No, he's not gone until we say he's gone. O'Malley, take him to a bay and save him" George looked at her confused "But... He's dead" he pointed out awkwardly "Did you not hear me?!" Bailey asked aggressively "He's not dead until we say he's dead. You know what to do, so do it" Bailey turned to the others "Grey, Gallagher, you're on this too, move"

"But he's dead," George whispered. Meredith and Aelia shared looks before heading to the ER

— —

Now in a room, George looked at the nurse awkwardly, as they tried to resuscitate the man "Olivia. Pulseless V-Tach"

"Line's in" Meredith informed "Ok, charge to 200. Clear" George shocked the patient to no avail "Push one of epi" Aelia told one of the nurses before looking to Olivia "Let's go again, charge to 300"

"You're serious?" George whispered to her in disbelief "Yes, charge again" Aeia gave him a hard look making him swallow "Ok, charge to 300" he agreed but the man's heart didn't restart

Just then, their resident came in "Grey, Gallagher, O'Malley... Any response" the three shook their heads negatively "Ok, you guys can-"

"Should I call it?" George interrupted

"What would you do next, O'Malley?"

"I would call it"

Aelia shook her head knowing the boy isn't getting the lesson their resident is trying to teach them "Gallagher?" Bailey asked looking at the young woman "A pericardial window"

Bailey nodded "Then get to it" she turned to Meredith "Grey, your done here, I've got a bowel obstruction for you" The blonde left, leaving Aelia and George to tend to the patient

— —

Some time later, Bailey came back to check on their progress "Where are you?"

"I can see his heart, his heart is not beating" George sassed making Aelia roll her eye "Ok, open the pericardium and aspirate. If the heart is still not beating, close and call it" At George exasperated look she continued "What? You think we're defiling this man's body?"

Aelia eyes darted between the two, she knew George was on the losing side, nobody ever wins against Bailey

"Well, we're certainly doing more than...."

"More than what...? If they're dead or dying when they come through those doors, you hump and hump hard. Why?"

"For the experience" George shrugged "No, what else, there's something more" The resident urged him "Dr. Bailey" Aelia started moving closer to the shorter woman "He's not going to get it. He's not getting the lesson"

"And you do?"

"Yes, I do. You hump hard, you do your best, so you can tell the family, no matter the outcome, that you tried your best. That's why you always need to give it your all" Aelia shrugged pressing her lips "It's not a lesson I need to learn. I've learned it a long time ago"

The resident gave her favorite intern a sad smile "Exactly. You can go" Aelia nodded and left the room. She needed her nephew

— —

Bailey and Webber watched through the nursery window as Aelia played with Andrew "She didn't need to learn that lesson, did she?" Webber asked, crossing his arms "No. No she did not"

It pained them to know what Aelia already knew that you have to give it your all even when the person is gone, to try your hardest to make them come back only to fail time and time again. They didn't want to know how she knew to give it your all and it not be enough

"You think she will ever have it easier?"

"I hope so"

Aelia smiled down at Andrew as he laughed "I really hope so" Webber sighed
