"Koa? I can see you now," an elderly, feminine voice comes from behind a curtain, which is promptly pulled back to reveal an omega woman. My eyes widen as I find myself looking into a practical mirror image of Cyrus, minus the masculine features. She's got the same icy eyes, slightly lighter hair, and the same intensity in her demeanor that he often has.
"This is Juliet, Cyrus's mother. Former Luna," Xavier answers the question that started forming in my mind. He gives her a small bow and I quickly follow suit, nearly tripping and falling flat on my face. Why am I getting so nervous?!
"I apologize that I haven't been able to meet you yet, darling," she gives an apologetic smile, motioning me to the medical bed. I'm not used to the affectionate tone she has with me, so I awkwardly sit myself down and try to find the right words to say.
I look to Xavier for help, only to find the guy has already left. Moon goddess, he moves like a ghost.
"Oh, dear, what happened to your pretty face?" She tsks, shaking her head as she pulls out some supplies.
"T-thank you for... this," I manage to say, swallowing anxiously. Knowing this is Cyrus's mother is making me sweat!
"It's my job as a Pack healer, no need for thanks," she chuckles, sitting across from me on a stool.
"You don't, uh, mind me being here?" I think back to how her mate reacted, Cyrus's father, when he heard I was staying at the pack house. How he disapproved of me for being a young single mother. Didn't think I was proper mate material for Cyrus. It still irks me, knowing that he thinks so lowly of me, although it shouldn't. I'm not planning to take my place as Cyrus's mate or Luna, anyway...
"Of course, darling! Moon goddess, I can tell that my mate has already given you some reservations about our family. I'll have to have a word with Alaric!"
"Cyrus's father?" I ask dumbly, even though I know that is who she refers to.
"Yes, he can be so narrow-minded. Please do not take it to heart. Now, off with that shirt! Cyrus wants me to treat every inch of you,"
I fumble awkwardly at the material, feeling embarrassed at revealing so much skin in front of another person but at the same time safe in this woman's presence. She's an omega like me, and the aura that surrounds her is calming and peaceful. I feel like I could tell her anything. Perhaps it is because my own mother was never as gentle as this woman is with me in a few minutes than in the ten years I grew up with him. He hid behind my father, always deferring to him and carrying out the punishments he was ordered to by his alpha.
I shiver at the memory, taking a deep breath before focusing on the here and now. I'm in a bright, warm room with a lovely woman who's treating my injuries. I'm fine. I'm okay. Nothing can—
My lunch feels like it'll come back up the second I see the silhouette of a familiar alpha approaching.
"Fuck! Does anyone have some pain-killing herbs?" Rex groans loudly, startling patients and healers in unison.
Juliet shakes her head in disapproval, sighing as she stands up and goes over to a cabinet, rifling through it.
"Excuse me while I handle this," she says, grabbing a glass vial of a murky brown liquid. I want to stop her, because the second she gets his attention he's going to see me. But the words die on my tongue as she walks up to him, handing him the vial.
As I predicted, his eyes find my presence over her shoulder, glowing murderously. There's no doubt the pain medication is for his jaw that I drove my fist into a couple days ago, and me seeing that the injury has made him resort to this is bound to wound his ego. Which doesn't bode well for me, as he already hates me with a burning passion.
