The next few days, things gradually get better. The visit from Cyrus helped me a ton, though I won't admit it aloud. My wolf is healing from the experience, obviously having been soothed by Cyrus's presence after the trauma we went through. He is not the best at dealing with distress, courtesy of our rough and shortened childhood.
I also feel terrible for neglecting Oliver like I did so I've been spending as much time as I can with him. I even baked with Morgan, letting him keep all the treats we made as payment for looking after Oliver when I was in that dark, isolated place. I wanted Morgan to eat them all himself, but of course, at training, he comes and delivers them to Xavier(and Rafael, who's been begging for some ever since he was denied last time) in a basket with a pretty bow at the top.
Cyrus and I share a knowing look as we watch the two gaze at each other, Morgan's cheeks flushed pink as Xavier struggles to say thank you. Later, when it is just us two, I decide to do some cupid's investigation.
"So, has Xavier ever talked about Morgan with you?"
Cyrus looks thoughtful for a moment, before responding, "He keeps those kinds of matters to himself,"
I groan. Leave it to Cyrus to be completely oblivious of his closest friend's love life. "But you must know something!"
"I know only what I see when they're together. Xavier usually can't find words and the beta's face takes on the color of a garden tomato,"
I giggle, patting his shoulder. "You're so naive. That's perfect chemistry, right there,"
"Forgive me if I don't notice others' courting rituals. I am focused on my own wooing of my mate,"
Moon goddess, he is not afraid to be up front. My stomach flips, but I can't help the smile that comes to my face. What a smooth guy.
"Okay, mister confident. But don't you think they would make a good couple?"
Cyrus shrugs. "They are compatible, perhaps. But they're not fated mates. They can't have pups together, either,"
I cross my arms, giving him glare. "Don't be so old fashioned, Cyrus! People can fall in love outside of the mate bond. Who knows if either of them will even find their fated one in their lifetime?"
It is a rare occurrence, to find one's other half, which is why Zacan took me as his mate despite me not being his fated one.
Cyrus is obviously displeased with my words, his expression going sour as he regains his normal pace, large strides leaving me behind as we walk through the woods. I hadn't even realized he'd been slowing himself so I could keep up.
"Hey! Don't be a dick!" I scamper after him.
He turns swiftly on me, eyes darkening. "Is the reason you don't accept me because another holds your heart, then?"
"What?! No!"
"Not even Oliver's father?"
I plant my hands on my hips, scoffing. "Absolutely not," If only he knew. How much of a sick bastard Zacan is. How I wouldn't touch the guy with a ten-foot pole, much less have romantic feelings towards him.
"So there is no other?" He presses on, jaw rippling aggressively.
Irritation flares in me at his insistence. "Not that it's any of your business, but I've only ever loved one alpha in my life. And he's dead," I drop the bomb, effectively silencing him.
He immediately looks stricken with guilt. "My moon, I'm sorry—"
"It's fine. That was what, when I was 13? It's a thing of the past, now," I shrug, doing my best to seem unaffected. It has been so long, anyhow, but it still hurts sometimes. Especially when I think of how much fun Des and I used to have. It was puppy love, sure, but it was real.
